Position Summary
The Youth Care Specialist role provides trauma-responsive services and supervises youth in our care, utilizing the AMIkids Personal Growth Model and the key elements of Positive Youth Development. All interactions shall follow the AMIkids Way and Guiding Principles of Kids First, Safety, and Family.
Essential Job Duties
- Ensure all interactions reflect Kids First, Safety, Family, Relationships, Meaningful Participation, Challenge, Engagement, and Community Involvement.
- Maintain a safe environment that promotes physical and emotional safety, effective learning, growth, and progress toward individualized goals.
- Model supportive, respectful behavior to foster healthy relationships, trust, and mutual respect; set clear boundaries, provide observations and reflections to youth, and promote equity and diversity.
- Guide behavior choices by teaching social-emotional skills, self-care, academic, communication, and daily living skills aligned with youth’s care plans and personal responsibility.
- Communicate expectations clearly, and provide recognition and positive reinforcement.
- Promote youth voice and choice by offering opportunities for decision-making and feedback about programming.
- Use prevention-based de-escalation skills to reduce or prevent youth incidents, following established procedures.
- Document youth behavior, interventions, and reports promptly according to procedures.
- Participate in Treatment Team meetings and debriefs to report youth progress and behavior.
- Maintain facility and supplies according to guidelines.
- Supervise youth during overnight shifts, conduct bed checks, and document shifts.
- Participate in day trips and special activities.
- Maintain CPR and First Aid certification through a recognized organization.
- Administer first aid and CPR during emergencies per national standards.
- Maintain crisis intervention and de-escalation training and certification.
- Transport youth and perform other work-related driving tasks.
- Assist with special projects and other duties as assigned.
Minimum Education, Training, and Experience
- High school diploma/GED (degree preferred).
- At least one year of child welfare experience, preferably with foster youth or related youth services.
- Behavior Health Tech Certification or related experience preferred.
