Job summary

The City of Gainesville is recruiting temporary Recreation Assistants to teach and lead youth development and recreational activities across PRCA facilities. You will support out-of-school-time programs for youth from preschool to age 24 in a safe environment and under close supervision.

Responsibilities include leading camp activities, developing educational programs, ensuring safety, and administering basic clerical duties.

Qualifications

• Minimum sixteen (16) years of age or high school graduate, and a minimum of six (6) months of experience volunteering, teaching, leading, or instructing children in an organized recreational or childcare setting.
• Temporary Recreation Assistants assigned to a Teen Camp must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
• Ability to pass Department of Children and Families (DCF) background check upon hire and as requested.
• Depending on the area of assignment, may be required to satisfactorily complete a Counselor in Training program.
• A valid Florida driver’s license may be required upon appointment.
• American Red Cross certification (or equivalent) in CPR, AED, and First Aid is required upon appointment.
• If assigned to a DCF Licensed Program: Must complete the 40-hour Introductory Child Care Training within 15 months of hire, and complete annual in-service trainings.

Responsibilities

• Leads and monitors summer camp activities for children aged 5–18.
• Develops and implements summer camp activities and programs.
• Develops and teaches educational programs for varied age groups.
• Cares for children/adults in recreation programs.
• Enforces safety procedures and building codes; reports injuries and incidents.
• Renders CPR/first aid when needed and completes incident reports.
