Job summary

The YMCA Detroit is hiring a Yoga Instructor to lead safe, engaging classes at Carl’s Family YMCA, fostering community and adapting to varied fitness levels.

Applicants should hold CPR/First Aid/AED and a recognized group fitness certification, with 1+ year teaching experience preferred. Flexible scheduling and a supportive team culture are offered.

Qualifications

• Current CPR, First Aid and AED certifications are required.
• A national or equivalent group fitness instruction certification (ACE/NETA/AFAA/NASM) or YMCA Foundations of Group Exercise certification.
• YMCA Healthy Lifestyles certification must be completed within 60 days of hire.
• At least one year of experience teaching group wellness classes preferred.

Responsibilities

• Leads energizing, safe yoga classes while building relationships with members.
• Answer questions within scope to support member goals.
• Maintain knowledge of wellness trends to provide accurate information.
• Modify class approach to accommodate all participants’ abilities and needs.
• Keep attendance records and follow YMCA policies; respond to emergencies.

General Function

Under the guidance of the Member Experience Director, the Yoga Instructor instructs yoga classes in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that welcomes people of all skill and fitness levels. The Yoga Instructor effectively builds community within the class and modifies class as needed to meet varied health, ability, and cultural needs.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

• Leads energizing, fun, safe, and educational yoga classes, while building effective, authentic relationships with members.

• Ask and answer questions within their scope of knowledge from program participants and members to support and celebrate them in achieving their goals related to the program or personal goals, mastering specific skills, or overall health and well-being.

• Maintains working knowledge of wellness and trends to provide effective information and support to members.

• Observe and adjust the approach to support all participants’ capabilities, physical conditions, health, and culture.

• Keeps accurate class attendance records and follows YMCA policies and procedures; responds to emergencies.

• Performs other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience/Training/Certifications

• Required certifications: CPR, First Aid, AED, national certification (ACE, NETA, AFAA, NASM) in group fitness instruction or YMCA Foundations of Group Exercise certification.

• Certification in areas of expertise.

• YMCA Healthy Lifestyles certification within 60 days of hire.

• At least one year of experience teaching group wellness classes is preferred.
