Job Location & Schedule

JOB LOCATION: Wellmark YMCA, and Des Moines Metro

HOURS/DAYS SCHEDULE: Standard work week, but may work evening or weekend hours to accommodate emergencies and/or trainings.

Salary & Application Deadline

SALARY: $58,000 - $64,000 annualized

CLOSING DATE FOR APPLICATIONS: June 6, 2025 - Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.

Position Summary

This position is responsible for planning and managing health and safety policies, facilitating the Safety Committee, managing workers compensation, and delivering trainings and certifications to ensure staff safety and emergency preparedness. It ensures compliance with OSHA and other regulations, conducts safety audits, and serves as the main contact for safety vendors, including the American Red Cross.

Essential Functions
  • Manage health, safety, and loss control policies.
  • Facilitate Safety Committee activities.
  • Develop and implement workplace safety policies and procedures.
  • Manage workers compensation programs and claims.
  • Serve as the organization’s lead for Child Abuse Prevention and Aquatic Standards Compliance.
  • Ensure emergency equipment is available at all facilities.
  • Manage safety training instructors and coordinate safety trainings.
  • Track certifications and ensure staff maintain current certifications.
  • Develop emergency preparedness plans and train staff accordingly.
  • Maintain knowledge of safety regulations and industry standards.
  • Coordinate community safety training programs.
  • Analyze accident data and develop prevention strategies.
  • Assist in incident investigations and safety audits.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or technical training in a safety-related field (preferred).
  • Three+ years of experience in a safety-related role.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Required safety certifications, including trainer level certifications from the American Red Cross.
  • Proficiency in business software; UKG experience preferred.
  • Strong organizational, facilitation, and project management skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise independent judgment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Additional training to be completed within the first 30 days and maintained thereafter.
Physical Requirements

Regularly required to talk, hear, stand, walk, sit, handle, feel, and reach with hands and arms. Occasionally work evenings or weekends and travel locally or out-of-area as needed.

Work Environment

Primarily in an office and fitness center environment, with occasional visits to non-standard workplaces. Uses standard office and safety equipment.
