High School Alternative Learning Aide

Position: Alternative Learning Aide

Location: High School

Employment: 29.5 hours

School Year: 2026–2027

Reports To: Building Principal and Alternative Learning Teacher

Position Summary

Yorktown Community Schools is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Alternative Learning Aide to support students enrolled in the high school. The successful candidate will work closely with the teachers and other school personnel to provide academic, behavioral, and social-emotional support to students.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate patience, consistency, good judgment, and the ability to build positive relationships with students while maintaining appropriate expectations and boundaries.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist the alternative learning teacher with daily classroom activities and student supervision.
  • Provide individual and small-group assistance to students with academic assignments.
  • Help students remain focused, engaged, and on task.
  • Encourage students to develop positive work habits, responsibility, and appropriate school behaviors.
  • Assist with implementing classroom and individual student behavior expectations.
  • Build positive, respectful relationships with students while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
  • Monitor student behavior and communicate concerns to the alternative learning teacher or building administration.
  • Assist students in developing organizational, communication, problem-solving, and life skills.
  • Provide support during transitions, study periods, lunch, passing periods, and other assigned activities as needed.
  • Assist with maintaining a safe, orderly, and supportive learning environment.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, counselors, and other school personnel.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student information and school matters.
  • Assist with attendance, record keeping, classroom organization, and other duties as assigned.
  • Perform other responsibilities as directed by the building principal or alternative learning teacher.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Experience working with adolescents or students in an educational setting preferred.
  • Experience working with students who have academic, behavioral, or social-emotional needs is preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with students and staff.
  • Ability to remain calm, patient, and professional when dealing with challenging situations.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
  • Ability to establish appropriate boundaries while developing positive relationships with students.
  • Ability to follow school policies, procedures, and directions.
  • Successful completion of required background checks and other employment requirements.

a.Supervises students as assigned.

Knowledge and Skills

a.The ability to work independently using Microsoft Word, Excel (including mail merge, formulas, and spreadsheets), Publisher, etc. to prepare , create, edit, design memos, reports, letters, and newsletters.

b.Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills in order to relate to students, parents, staff, administrators, and community.The ability to negotiate effective working relationships, and develop position resolutions to conflict.

c.Strong organizational skills in order to manage multiple issues simultaneously combined with ability to effectively prioritize.

d.The ability to work independently and within a team while maintaining cooperative working relationships.

e.The ability to communicate electronically.Possess highly developed technology skills.

REASONING ABILITY:The ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral functions.The ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:The ability to operate a personal computer and related software.The ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff, and the school community.The ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally, and in writing.The ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and YCS School Board policies.
