Oswego County Opportunities, Inc. is seeking a Full-Time Shelter Support Specialist to provide coverage at the Runaway and Homeless Youth Shelter in Oswego County.

The role carries out duties per agency policies and licensing regulations, with Monday and Friday 8:00am–4:00pm and a pay rate of $18.18–$22.45 per hour for 38 hours weekly. The position includes crisis intervention, case management, transportation coordination, and data entry to support program outcomes, while maintaining safety and

  • Must have valid NYS driver\'s license and access to a reliable vehicle.
  • High School Diploma or GED and 12 months related experience in human services or equivalent.
  • Must obtain and maintain all required certifications and trainings within required timeframes.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to clients in person and via phone, providing intervention, referrals and assistance.
  • Provide crisis intervention and one-on-one supportive counseling.
  • Assist consumers with contacting resources and arranging transportation.
  • Coordinate services and transport for shelter entrants and assess needs.
  • Enter data timely and accurately into databases and assist with program statistics.
  • Assist with meals, housekeeping, shelter maintenance, and creating a home-like environment.
  • Attend training to meet agency, program, and state/federal requirements.

ABOUT THE POSITION:

The YES! Shelter is the only homeless and runaway youth crisis center in Oswego County. We serve runaway and homeless youth under the age of 18 with support and services.

JOB SUMMARY:

Provides coverage at the Runaway and Homeless Youth Shelter. Carries out duties in accordance with Agency and Program Policies and procedures, and Federal/State policies/licensing regulations.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Responds to clients in person and via phone calls to YES! Shelter. Provides appropriate intervention, referrals and assistance
  • Provides crisis intervention in a calm and effective manner; provides one-on-one supportive counseling to clients
  • Assists consumers in contacting and connecting with resources, both internally and external to OCO
  • Assists consumers with activities to meet needs and goals such as scheduling/attending various appointments, scheduling/providing transportation, planning/participating in recreational/social activities and health/medication related needs
  • Gathers necessary information for shelter entry assessment; coordinates services with prospective entry; arranges a safe pick-up place and arranges transportation
  • Ensures safety of the shelter and of the residents at all times
  • Acts as a positive role model; assist youth in self-help skills; provides case management services
  • Provides assistance with meal preparation, housekeeping and cleaning, shelter maintenance and collecting, organizing and documenting donations, and generally ensuring a friendly, home-like environment
  • Facilitates house meetings as assigned
  • Provides transportation as needed
  • Enters data in a timely and accurate manner into the databases according to requirements; assists with tracking and compiling statistics related to program activities and outcomes
  • Completes all case entries and paperwork according to Program requirements
  • Assists with outreach and awareness activities, as needed
  • Communicates with Site Supervisor regarding client activities, concerns and interactions
  • Provides satisfactory exchange of information to oncoming shifts when staffing the Youth Shelter
  • Facilitates household activities at the shelter, ensuring a friendly, home-like environment
  • Attends training as required to meet Agency, program, and State/Federal requirements
  • Must have acceptable ability to carry out the responsibilities of the position including readily negotiating stairs.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned from time to time
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must exhibit good judgement and maintain strict confidentiality of agency, program and consumer information
  • Must demonstrate the knowledge of regulations, services, rights and responsibilities for the population services
  • Must obtain and maintain all required certifications and trainings within required timeframes
  • Must have a valid NYS Driver's license with driving record within policy and access to a properly insured, reliable vehicle for regular travel and transporting consumers
  • Must have a High School Diploma or GED and 12 months related experience in the area of human services or any equivalent combination of education, experience and training
