Terms of Employment: Permanent driver position. Pay details vary by certification and contributions to PERS. Initial training at the hourly minimum wage rate. FLSA status: NON-EXEMPT.
Position Summary
Operate school buses in accordance with Federal and State of Nevada traffic laws and regulations of the Nevada Department of Education and Lyon County School District. Under immediate supervision by the Area Coordinator.

- Operate school buses in accordance with federal and State of Nevada traffic laws and regulations of the Nevada Department of Education and Lyon County School District.
- Drive defensively following safe driving practices.
- Be responsible for the safe operation, conditions, washing, and cleanliness of the bus (inside and out).
- Make necessary inspections, pre-trip and post-trip, and report any needed maintenance as indicated by the inspection.
- Establish and maintain rapport with passengers. Ability to deal effectively and supervise students, maintain pupil control and report violations to proper authority.
- Keep accurate records and submit all reports at the specified time.
- Attend driver meetings and training sessions as required unless absence is approved.
- Transports students to special activities such as field trips and athletic events as assigned.
- Substitutes will be contacted on an "as needed" basis for driving assignments. Availability: when contacted by the Area Coordinator, a substitute shall be expected to be available to work a minimum of two work days per month. If a substitute is not available or refuses a driving assignment after five (5) refusals, the substitute driver may be terminated.
- Makes deliveries and provides special back up driving services for exceptional or special needs students.
- Performs other tasks related to the position as assigned.

Based on identified business purposes, night and weekend work schedules or on-call status may be required, as well as filling in on route assignments. Be free from addiction to narcotics, alcohol or other controlled substances. Demonstrates initiative, self-reliance, leadership, reliability, punctuality, and good moral conduct. Maintains personal habits of cleanliness and refrains from inappropriate subject matter, language, and gestures.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Position Expectations)
- Must have knowledge of rules, regulations, and practices of transportation and workplace safety.
- Driving techniques including knowledge of vehicle maneuverability, road and traffic signs, signals and markings.
- Nevada traffic laws for motor vehicle regulations as outlined in Nevada manuals and district policies.
- Ability to apply defensive driving principles and use good judgment in unforeseen circumstances or bad weather.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
- Ability to deal effectively with and supervise students.
- Ability to operate a two-way radio.
- Ability to work flexible hours and shifts at various locations.
- Adequate hearing in both ears; meeting federally mandated requirements.
- Vision standards as mandated, with or without corrective lenses.
- Depth perception meeting CDL requirements.
- Be free from mental or physical problems that may interfere with safe driving.
- Possess full and normal use of both hands and arms and both legs and feet.
- Avoid medications that impair driving ability.
- Maintain blood pressure within federally mandated requirements.
- Meet all other Federal Department of Transportation physical requirements.
Position Requirements
Education, Training, and Experience:
- High school graduation or equivalent (GED, college, technical, trade school, foreign equivalency, etc.).
- Safe driving record to be maintained for the duration of the assignment.
- Must be at least twenty-one years of age.
- Must be able to read and speak English sufficiently to converse with the general public, understand highway traffic signs, respond to inquiries, and make entries on reports and records.
Licenses and Certificates:
- A Nevada Class B or A Commercial Driver's License with required endorsements that allow operation of a school bus; license must be maintained for the duration of the assignment.
- Certification by the Nevada Department of Education that the employee has completed and passed the State Bus Driver Examination.
- Valid Department of Transportation Physical Examination Certification indicating qualification to operate a school bus; maintain a valid physical for the duration of the assignment.
- Current CPR/AED certificate from a recognized organization; certification must be maintained for the duration of the assignment with in-person training and hands-on component. Online courses not accepted.
- Bloodborne Pathogen and Universal Precautions Training.
- Lyon County School District zero tolerance for safety-sensitive functions; bus drivers are subject to drug testing per policy (pre-employment, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, random, and return-to-duty).
Examples of Assigned Work Areas
Travel to and from Lyon County School District facilities and schools, including classrooms, restrooms, gyms, offices, playgrounds, athletic fields, and related facilities.
Work Environment
Strength: Exert force as needed, up to 50-150 lbs occasionally; 25-50 lbs frequently; up to 25 lbs constantly. Gripping/Grasping: Sufficient strength to secure straps and operate a vehicle. Pushing/Pulling: Up to 150-175 lbs for maneuvering students in wheelchairs. Physical Demands: Frequent standing, walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, and other movements; long periods of sitting; vision and hearing requirements described.
Environmental Conditions: Climate-controlled office setting with exposure to weather; noise levels ranging from moderate to very loud.
Hazards: Furniture, equipment, chemicals, fumes, and machinery relevant to assignment.

District-issued/personal vehicles, buses, computers, hand trucks, multimedia equipment, electronic boards, projectors, radios, telephones, and related tech.
