Job summary

Mesquite ISD seeks a qualified Fleet Maintenance Technician to ensure safe operation of the school bus fleet, overseeing maintenance and repairs, and complying with DOT and state inspection requirements. Reports to the Director of Transportation and leads shop personnel to uphold safety standards.

Candidates must hold a CDL Class B with air brakes and passenger endorsement, TEA School Bus Driver Certificate, and a High School Diploma or GED.

Qualifications

• Must pass the D.O.T. Medical Examination Report for School Bus
• Must pass alcohol and drug test
• Read, write, understand and communicate in English

Responsibilities

• Ensures that the school bus fleet is safe to operate
• Develop and maintain safe shop practices
• Ensures district buses meet all DOT and state annual inspections and preventative maintenance requirements
• Ensure shop personnel receive required training to maintain the bus fleet is safe for student transportation
• Manage parts inventory of all parts on hand
• Maintains all bus vehicle records
• Assist with information concerning the purchase of new fleet vehicles
• Establish an efficient and effective system of routine equipment and automotive maintenance and / or preventative care
• Use of diagnostic equipment to evaluate mechanical problems in automotive engines
• Rebuild, replace, or repair vehicle parts such as engines, brakes, transmission lines, electrical assemblies, and accessories
• Establish and promote high standards of safety and good housekeeping standards in all work-connected areas
• Perform other duties as assigned

EMPLOYMENT BEGINS:As soon as possible

PRIMARY PURPOSE

To ensure the safe and economical usage of fleet vehicles; maintenance, repair, and oversight of repair facilities conducting fleet maintenance operations.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Certification

• High School Diploma or GED
• Valid Texas Commercial Driver's License (Class B) with air brakes and passenger endorsement
• Texas Education Agency School Bus Driver Certificate

Special Knowledge/Skills

• Must pass the D.O.T. Medical Examination Report for School Bus
• Drivers.
• Must be able to pass alcohol and drug test.
• Possess ability to read, write, understand and communicate verbal and written instructions and responses in English.
• Advanced knowledge of diesel and fuel engineer maintenance and repair.
• Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and perform repairs independently.
• Demonstrate success in performing a wide variety of tasks requiring an understanding of and proficiency at automotive and truck mechanical repair.
• Possess a full range of motion in hands, arms, and trunk.
• Possess effective leadership and communication skills.
• Ability to operate bus.

Experience

• Five years' experience as a mechanic

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
