Year One - Junior Designer - Computational Design

Join SOM’s Year One Program as a Junior Designer - Computational Design. Our Year One program picks up where your formal education leaves off, with a suite of events and creative initiatives to help you get the most out of your first year at SOM. Alongside your day-to-day project responsibilities, we’ll encourage you to expand your learning and to propose bold ideas for the future of design.

Complete applications must include Resume or CV and Work Samples. Work Samples shall be one PDF attachment, 10-20 pages, maximum 5 MB. Submit Work Samples as part of your application in the section where the application asks for your Resume or CV.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Contributes to the development of an aspect of a Project(s) under the direct supervision by Computational Design Lead.

  • Provides computational design input to projects during all phases.

  • Works closely with design teams to propose, evaluate and develop systems-based models.

  • Maintains interoperability of workflows and manages data flows.

  • Produces presentation and deliverables such as diagrams, data visualization, 3D models, drawings, renderings, and animations.

  • Effectively communicates internally through timely and appropriate written, oral, and visual means.

  • Creates and innovates with a strong conceptual design ability.

  • Actively collaborates at a project team level.

  • Demonstrates a basic understanding of building materials, systems, codes, details, and construction techniques.

  • Manages time and workload to meet project task deadlines.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Completion of a degree in Architecture, Mathematics, Computer Science, Design or other related degree.

  • Demonstrates good algorithmic thinking and ability to develop innovative workflows.

  • Strong visual, verbal and written communication skills.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in coding (e.g. Python, C#, JavaScript) is required.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in Grasshopper and Dynamo.

  • Demonstrated experience creating engaging data visualizations.

  • A good design eye, and a creative thinker.

  • Interest in the creation of architectural geometry, design space exploration, design refinement.

  • Good storytelling ability, communication and presentation skills appreciated.

  • Passion for integrated design and knowledge of structure or building physics welcomed.

Compensation for this role is based upon experience, qualifications, location, and education and typically ranges from $60,000 – $64,000.
