Yard Supervisor
Location: Kennewick, WA Yard
We are seeking a motivated and experienced Yard Supervisor to lead daily yard operations and ensure the safe, efficient movement of materials, equipment, and products throughout our facility. This hands‑on leadership role is responsible for supervising yard personnel, maintaining operational excellence, supporting customer service initiatives, and promoting a culture of safety and teamwork.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and Manage Yard Operations: Supervise and coordinate daily activities of yard personnel, including loading, unloading, storing, and transporting materials. Assign work priorities and monitor employee productivity, accuracy, and performance. Ensure efficient utilization of equipment, manpower, and yard space to support operational goals. Assist with receiving, inspecting, and organizing incoming materials.
- Foster a Safe and Productive Work Environment: Promote and enforce company safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements. Ensure team members receive proper equipment training, certifications, and ongoing safety instruction. Conduct routine inspections of equipment, work areas, and operations to identify and correct safety concerns. Lead by example in maintaining a safe, clean, and organized yard environment.
- Support Customer Service Excellence: Assist customers with material selection, load building, and product pickup. Provide accurate information regarding inventory availability, order status, and deliveries. Ensure outgoing shipments meet company standards, shipping specifications, and safety requirements.
- Develop and Coach Employees: Train new and existing team members on yard procedures, product knowledge, equipment operation, and safety practices. Provide ongoing coaching, guidance, and support to ensure employee success and professional growth. Address operational issues and elevate concerns as appropriate. Partner with management by providing input on employee performance and development opportunities.
- Maintain Equipment and Facility Standards: Ensure yard equipment and machinery are properly maintained and serviced according to schedule. Monitor the condition of the yard, warehouse, and outdoor storage areas. Coordinate proper disposal or recycling of scrap materials and debris. Help maintain inventory accuracy and material organization throughout the facility.
Additional Responsibilities
- Participate in daily yard activities as needed to support operational demands.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Directly supervises assigned yard personnel.
- Oversees daily work assignments, productivity, quality, and safety compliance.
- Provides coaching, training, and performance feedback.
- Supports employee development and assists management with performance evaluations and personnel decisions.
Minimum Education Required
High School/GED
Qualifications
Required
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience in yard operations, material handling, logistics, or a related field, including leadership responsibilities.
- Strong knowledge of building materials, load building, inventory handling, and yard operations.
- Experience operating material handling equipment and heavy machinery.
Preferred
- CDL License.
- Experience in the building materials or lumber industry.
- Equipment operation certifications.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
Primarily works in an outdoor yard environment and is exposed to varying weather conditions, equipment noise, and dust.
Frequently lifts and carries materials weighing up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 80 pounds.
Must be able to stand, walk, bend, climb, kneel, push, pull, and perform physical labor throughout the workday.
Ability to safely operate equipment and work around moving machinery.
