Job summary

The Yard Supervisor at Carter Lumber is a hands-on role blending administrative work with yard operations. You will manage employees, escort customer service, and ensure efficient loading, dispatching, and inventory control in a fast-paced lumber yard.

With prior supervisory experience in customer service and familiarity with building materials, you will lead by example, train team members, and maintain safety and policy standards while coordinating deliveries and schedule planning.

Qualifications

• Previous supervisory experience in customer service, preferably in a lumber yard.
• Dispatch experience is a plus.
• Ability to direct and train others effectively; familiarity with building materials.
• Ability to be an effective team member and leader.
• Experience with Microsoft Office, especially Excel.

Responsibilities

• Oversee employee management, including hiring, communicating, and disciplining.
• Assist customers with selection and loading of materials.
• Maintain yard operations: pull and stage materials, dispatch orders, schedule deliveries, manage inventory, and maintain equipment.

The Yard Supervisor role at Carter Lumber is a hybrid of administrative work and working in the lumber yard. This is not a desk job by any means – you will play a very active and vital role in the functioning of the lumber yard!

Description

Employee management, customer service and yard operations are the key components in this role. For employee management, you will be tasked with hiring, communicating, and disciplining. You will also be responsible for setting the proper example for all lumber yard employees to mirror.

For customer service, it’s important to be willing to help customers as needed. This entails assisting them with the selection and loading of their materials with a friendly attitude.

For yard operations, you will ensure that material is accurately pulled and staged for pickup and delivery. You will assist with dispatching by structuring the shipping of orders, including scheduling. You will be responsible for maintaining the inventory in the yard by conducting cycle counts and keeping the yard organized. You will ensure all yard policies are followed including sales, inventory, and safety. Finally, you will take charge of maintaining all equipment; scheduling vehicles for service and keeping up their maintenance schedules.
