Yard & Facilities Manager

Starting Salary: $55,000 - $60,000

Position Summary

The Yard & Facilities Manager is responsible for the day-to-day organization, maintenance, and operation of the Morris facility, yard, materials, and fleet coordination activities. This is a hands-on position responsible for ensuring the property is clean, safe, organized, and operational while making sure field crews have the materials, vehicles, and equipment they need to perform their work efficiently.

The Yard & Facilities Manager will oversee material receiving and inventory counts, loading and unloading trucks, staging materials for crews, coordinating fleet and truck needs, and handling general facility maintenance both inside and outside the building.

Key Responsibilities
Yard & Facilities Management
  • Maintain the overall cleanliness, organization, and appearance of the facility, warehouse, shop, and yard.
  • Perform and/or coordinate general facility maintenance and minor repairs.
  • Maintain exterior areas, including parking areas, storage areas, entrances, fencing, and grounds.
  • Ensure materials, equipment, trailers, and vehicles are stored in designated locations.
  • Keep work areas, aisles, loading areas, and emergency access points clean and unobstructed.
  • Identify facility repairs or maintenance needs and coordinate outside vendors when necessary.
  • Assist with seasonal property needs, including snow and ice management, lawn/grounds upkeep, and weather-related preparation.
  • Maintain a safe and professional facility that is ready to support daily field operations.
Materials & Inventory
  • Receive incoming materials and verify deliveries for accuracy.
  • Load and unload trucks, trailers, and deliveries using appropriate equipment.
  • Organize and properly store telecommunications and underground construction materials.
  • Stage and prepare materials for field crews based on project requirements.
  • Maintain accurate material counts and assist with regular physical inventory.
  • Track materials being received, issued to crews, transferred, or returned.
  • Identify material shortages, discrepancies, damaged materials, or excess inventory and communicate concerns to management.
  • Help maintain an organized inventory system so materials can be easily located and accounted for.
  • Coordinate with Project Managers and field leadership regarding upcoming material needs.
Truck & Fleet Coordination
  • Assist with the daily coordination of company trucks, trailers, and fleet vehicles.
  • Track vehicle assignments and help ensure trucks are available for appropriate crews and projects.
  • Coordinate routine vehicle maintenance, oil changes, tire service, inspections, and repairs.
  • Schedule vehicles with approved repair shops and service vendors as needed.
  • Monitor vehicle condition and communicate maintenance or safety concerns.
  • Assist with keeping vehicle registrations, insurance cards, inspection documentation, and other required information current and available.
  • Coordinate movement of trucks and trailers between the yard, projects, and service locations.
  • Help ensure vehicles are clean, organized, properly equipped, and field-ready.
  • Communicate vehicle downtime and expected return-to-service dates to Operations and field management.
Crew & Operational Support
  • Work closely with Construction Managers, Project Managers, and field supervisors to prepare crews for daily operations.
  • Ensure crews have the necessary materials, tools, vehicles, and trailers before deployment.
  • Assist with loading trucks and trailers for upcoming projects.
  • Receive returned materials and equipment from crews and ensure items are properly stored.
  • Help coordinate deliveries and pickups between the Morris yard, vendors, subcontractors, and project locations.
  • Respond to operational needs that arise throughout the day and help keep field operations moving efficiently.
Safety & Accountability
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized yard and warehouse environment.
  • Follow company safety procedures when operating forklifts, loaders, trucks, trailers, or other equipment.
  • Ensure materials are stacked, secured, and stored appropriately.
  • Immediately report unsafe conditions, damaged equipment, vehicle concerns, or facility hazards.
  • Assist management with maintaining accountability for company materials, equipment, vehicles, and property.
  • Support company policies regarding facility security, vehicle use, inventory control, and equipment handling.

Requirements

Qualifications
  • Previous experience in yard management, warehouse operations, facilities maintenance, fleet coordination, construction, utilities, telecommunications, or a related field preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple responsibilities throughout the day.
  • Experience with material receiving, inventory counts, and material handling.
  • Ability to safely load and unload trucks and trailers.
  • Basic mechanical knowledge and ability to identify common vehicle, trailer, equipment, or facility maintenance concerns.
  • Comfortable working both indoors and outdoors throughout the year.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with field crews, management, vendors, and service providers.
  • Basic computer skills for inventory, fleet records, email, and company tracking systems.
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
  • Forklift or equipment operation experience preferred.
  • Telecommunications or underground utility construction experience is a plus.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to regularly lift and move materials weighing up to 50–75 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb, push, pull, and perform physical work throughout the workday.
  • Ability to safely operate material-handling equipment.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying Illinois weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow.
