Job summary

Indianapolis Fruit Company is looking for a Yard Truck Operator in Indianapolis, IN. In this role, you will manage trailer staging, perform safety checks on vehicles, and maintain equipment to support our distribution network. Ideal candidates will have a CDL Class A license and experience with truck operations.

You'll work in a dynamic environment, ensuring proper handling of refrigerated units and contributing to the efficiency of our operations. We offer a competitive hourly rate with a comprehensive benefits package.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • At least 1 year of truck and trailer backing experience.
  • No more than 2 preventable accidents in the past 3 years.

Responsibilities

  • Efficiently stage trailers for loading while ensuring temperature control.
  • Perform checks on trailers and trucks for safety equipment.
  • Work with the Transportation Management team for proper equipment usage.

Skills

Proficiency in operating yard trucks
Ability to maneuver vehicles in tight spaces
Understanding of loading and unloading procedures
Proper understanding of refrigeration equipment
Ability to communicate in English
Willingness to work weekends and holidays

Education

Valid CDL Class A license

Essential Function
  • Efficiently and accurately stage trailers for loading and transport while ensuring proper temperature control to the refrigerated units.
  • Perform checks on trailers and trucks to ensure that mechanical, safety and emergency equipment is in good working order.
  • Collaborates with warehouse personnel using safety traffic control lighting system to move equipment from one location to another, according to door assignments.
  • Work with the Transportation Management team to ensure proper equipment is used for routes.
  • Perform checks on trailers and trucks to ensure that mechanical, safety and emergency equipment is in good working order.
  • Work closely with the Maintenance provider to ensure repairs are finished before using the equipment. Report any mechanical issues promptly for repair or maintenance.
  • Couple or uncouple trailers by changing trailer jack positions, connecting or disconnecting air or electrical lines, or manipulating fifth‑wheel locks.
  • Fuel and set proper temperatures to the refrigerated units.
  • Maintain an organized and orderly lot for easy truck and trailer movement and efficiency.
Competencies
  • Proficiency in operating yard trucks, trailers, and other equipment safely and efficiently
  • Ability to maneuver vehicles in tight spaces and follow traffic patterns within the yard
  • Understanding of loading and unloading procedures, trailer hookups, and brake systems
  • Proper understanding and operation of refrigeration equipment
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak English to communicate verbally and in writing, bilingual a plus
  • Able to work weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed
  • Ability to follow directions and willing to learn
Requirements
  • Valid CDL Class A license
  • At least 21 years of age
  • At least 1 year of truck and trailer backing experience
  • No more than 2 preventable accidents in the past 3 years
  • No more than 2 moving violations in the past 3 years and proven safe PSP score
Compensation
  • $25.00/hour
Schedule
  • Start time: 3:00pm – 1:00am (Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday)
Physical Demands
  • Stand or sit for long periods of time
  • Kneel and stoop as needed while performing vehicle inspections
