Job Description: Yard Associate and Forklift Operator


Founded in 2010, The Ground Up (TGU) is Houston's fastest growing landscape supply company. We manufacture mulches & soils and carry a large selection of base, gravels, and sand products. TGU also operates three re-wholesale nurseries in the Houston Metro Area.


Job Summary:


The Equipment and Service Operator supports day-to-day operations of an assigned work site that services wholesale customers with bulk purchases. The ideal candidate is skilled in safely and efficiently operating heavy equipment in a busy and sometimes congested worksite, while never compromising the quality of work. We seek a positive team player who is reliable, flexible, organized, and detail-oriented, who can consistently deliver excellent customer service.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Comply with the proper operation and maintenance of assigned equipment

  • Perform a daily equipment walk-around inspection and maintain preventive maintenance

  • Operate equipment for 8+ hours per day, year-round in all types of weather and ground conditions

  • Perform other job-related duties such as general housekeeping of machine, general lubrication of applicable components

  • Travel occasionally to different project sites within the Houston area

  • Gain in-depth knowledge of product line

  • Operate forklifts in warehouse and off-road

  • Manage Inventoryand quality control

  • Maintain a neat, clean and orderly work area

  • Ensure proper use of personal protection equipment at all times

  • Perform physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials

  • Other duties as assigned or needed


Essential Requirements:



  • HS diploma or GED

  • Minimum 3 years of experience as an equipment operator

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Willing and available to work during all seasons of the year

  • Reliable transportation to get to and from worksites

  • Valid State issued driver's license


Desired Qualifications:



  • A good mechanical/ mathematical aptitude as well as a general understanding of hydraulics


Physical Demands:


While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and climb or balance. The employee is frequently required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to talk or hear and taste or smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.



Work Environment:


While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
