Job summary

Stanford University’s SSRL seeks a Beam Line Engineer for the XAS group to provide technical and methodological support across beam lines, optimize optics, and train users on instrumentation and software. The role spans cryogenic to high-temperature environments and requires strong collaboration with scientists and staff.

The position emphasizes independent initiative and effective communication within a dynamic, national facility; on-call support is expected, with a generous benefits package

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree and 4+ years in beam line instrumentation or X-ray detectors.
• Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
• Ability to interact with diverse scientists and staff, work in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

• Support XAS beam line developments and scientific users.
• Optimize beam line optics and experimental setups.
• Train users on instrumentation and software.
• Guide users in data collection optimization.
• Contribute to design, construction and commissioning of in-hutch instrumentation.
• Operate and enhance x-ray optics, detectors, data acquisition and analysis software.
• Occasional evenings and weekends as part of on-call support.
• Other duties as assigned.
