TITLE: WASTEWATER PLANT OPERATOR II

PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION:

The purpose of this classification is to serve as lead worker and assist in the daily operation and maintenance of the City’s water or wastewater treatment plants, ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Runs generators and lime stabilization unit; runs press for sludge operators; cleans channels; cycles roto mats; controls amount of dilution water returned to thickener; monitors and maintains a high-quality plant discharge to ensure a good ecological balance, while eliminating water borne health hazards to the surrounding community.
  • Calibrates and runs dissolved oxygen at plant and pH on plant water; calibrates effluent flow meter; calibrates and keeps enzymes feeding in INF; calibrates and figures return rate for sludge; calibrates daily water samplers; calibrates meters.
  • Monitors septic tank dumpers.
  • Makes checks around the plant to ensure that equipment is running properly and makes technical adjustments when necessary.
  • Initiates emergency response to problems in department; displays judgment in operational changes based on experience and standard operating procedures.
  • Prepares and submits a variety of records and reports, including transport tickets, rain data, flow logs and charts, logs, etc.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on all treatment plant equipment as needed.
  • Maintains plant security on assigned shifts.
  • Performs building and grounds maintenance.
  • Gathers samples for and performs lab analysis.
  • Reads previous logbook entries and communicates with other operators for any problems or instructions occurring while off duty.
  • Maintains, regulates, and replaces chemicals used in the plant process.
  • Attends continuing education classes in order to maintain up to date certifications required for operator’s position.
  • Handles unforeseen situations due to weather conditions.
  • Operates chemical feeders and pumps, backwash pump, high service pumps, pickup truck, calculator, forklift, tractor, lawn mowers, personal computer, lab equipment, telephone, radio, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, to include the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, or other system software.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:

Performs general housekeeping duties at plant; assists in grounds maintenance.

Performs other related duties as required.

Requirements:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma or GED; three years of experience in water or wastewater treatment plant operations; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Must possess and maintain a valid Kentucky driver’s license.

Must possess and maintain a valid Kentucky Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Cabinet Class II Wastewater Plant Operators License.
