Job summary

Jacksonville State University is seeking a part-time Writing Center consultant to work with student writers on essays, speeches, proposals, and multimodal projects. You will help students understand topic sentences, thesis statements, and paragraph structure, while applying grammar and mechanics knowledge.

Responsibilities include scheduling appointments, collaborating with faculty and staff, and maintaining confidentiality.

Qualifications

• Successful completion of EH 101 & 102 (or equivalent) with a grade of A.
• Working knowledge of the writing process and various rhetorical styles.
• Familiarity in locating and documenting reliable and credible sources.
• Familiarity with MLA/APA citation styles. Other styles are a bonus.
• Applicants must be enrolled as a JSU student taking at least three (3) hours per fall or spring semester. (Requirements for international students below. *)
• If not a first‑time student, the applicant must have a GPA of 3.50 or higher.
• Selected applicants must provide evidence of student enrollment and GPA (unofficial transcript or printout of enrollment/GPA from MyJSU.

• Consultants will also have the opportunity to specialize in types of writing and citation styles.
• Reliability and professionalism when scheduling appointments with students.
• Work effectively with a diverse body of faculty, staff, and students.
• Maintain confidentiality of information.
• Consultants must understand the structure of topic sentences, thesis statements, paragraphs, and essays along with essay knowledge.
• Writing consultants should have a good understanding of grammar and mechanics as well.
