Summary

Job Description: The Writer/Editor identifies, researches, and writes stories for AU’s flagship publication, American magazine, including at least three feature stories and more than a dozen departments per issue. Participates in editorial planning, collaborates with the editor and art director, generates story ideas, attends photo shoots, writes headlines, and crafts marketing materials. Assists in editing the magazine before press and in bluelines. Contributes to the magazine’s website and social media feeds. Also contributes to other storytelling platforms, including AU Now.

Essential Functions
  • Research, report, and write a variety of stories for American magazine, including interviews, research, and writing in various styles. Responsible for at least three features and multiple departments per issue. Writes headlines, cutlines, cover copy, and blurbs. Conducts editing and contributes to AU Now.
  • Collaborate with the editor to develop the editorial calendar, identify sources, conduct research, and stay updated on industry trends.
  • Manage the magazine’s website and social media content, including uploading stories into the CMS.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Position Details
  • Full-time, hybrid (three days in the office).
  • 35 hours per week.
Salary Range

$70,000-$75,000 annually, commensurate with experience.

Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent.
  • 5-8 years of relevant experience.
  • Professional writing experience, preferably in a news outlet or higher education.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 8-10 years of relevant experience.
Additional Qualifications
  • Strong writing, editing, proofing, social media, and digital publishing skills.
  • Self-starter, able to prioritize and meet deadlines under pressure.
  • Skilled interviewer and researcher.
  • Good judgment, diplomatic, versatile in writing styles, team-oriented.
