Job summary

The City of High Point is seeking a Construction Inspector to ensure public infrastructure projects meet plans, specifications, permits, and regulations within the Water Resources Department. The role emphasizes field inspections of water, wastewater, and related utilities with a focus on safety and quality.

What You'll Do:

Construction Inspectors perform technical inspection work to ensure public infrastructure, private development, and capital improvement projects comply with approved plans, specifications, permits, engineering standards, and applicable regulations within the Water Resources Department.

Essential Tasks & Responsibilities:
  • Inspect construction of water distribution, wastewater collection, treatment facilities, and related utility improvements.
  • Support emergency response infrastructure repairs as assigned.
  • Inspect construction projects throughout all phases of work to verify compliance with approved plans, specifications, permits, City standards, and applicable local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Review construction materials, equipment, and workmanship to ensure quality standards and contract requirements are met.
  • Interpret engineering plans, technical specifications, standard details, construction contracts, and applicable codes and regulations.
  • Inspect utility installations, street cuts, and public infrastructure improvements for compliance with approved standards, as assigned.
  • Identify deficiencies, document findings, communicate required corrective actions, and verify completion of corrective work.
  • Perform field measurements, calculations, quantity verification, and documentation to support project administration and contract management.
  • Perform or coordinate field testing, material sampling, laboratory testing, and quality assurance/quality control activities.
  • Review contractor pay requests, contract quantities, change orders, field modifications, and supporting documentation for accuracy and compliance.
  • Maintain accurate inspection reports, daily logs, testing records, permits, photographs, electronic project documentation, and other technical records.
  • Document field changes and as-built conditions for engineering and permanent records.
  • Conduct follow-up inspections and assist with project closeout, final acceptance, and completion documentation.
  • Coordinate construction activities with contractors, developers, engineers, consultants, utility representatives, regulatory agencies, property owners, and City staff.
  • Attend project progress meetings, contractor scheduling meetings, utility coordination meetings, public meetings, and other meetings related to assigned projects.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, City safety policies, erosion and sediment control requirements, environmental regulations, and established construction standards, as applicable.
  • Provide inspection support for emergency or after-hours construction, utility repairs, or other assigned work.
  • Serve as the City's representative in the field by promoting quality workmanship, regulatory compliance, public safety, and effective communication throughout the construction process.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
