Job summary

The Town of Groton is seeking a Water Pollution Control Facility Technician to perform paraprofessional technical duties essential to the operation, maintenance, and compliance of the sewer system. You will conduct field inspections, respond to call-before-you-dig requests, and assist with design computations and reporting.

The ideal candidate will have an Associate’s Degree in civil or mechanical engineering, proficiency with CAD/GIS, and strong communication skills to interact with town

Qualifications

  • Three years of field and office engineering experience, or five years with technical training in construction/engineering.
  • Criminal background, drug testing, and driving record checks required prior to employment.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct on-site surveys and field inspections of the Town’s sewer system and facilities.
  • Stake construction sites and respond to emergency call-before-you-dig requests; inspect grease traps, grinder pumps, and sewer tie-ins.
  • Review site plans, perform design computations, assist with cost estimates and specifications, and maintain records.

STARTING RATE: $35.92 (contract currently in negotiation)

POSITION RANGE: $35.92 - $41.25

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Water Pollution Control Facility (WPCF) Technician performs a wide variety of paraprofessional technical duties essential to the operation, maintenance, and compliance of the Town’s sewer system and facilities. Working under general supervision, this role combines hands-on field inspections with advanced technical and office-based responsibilities. Field duties include conducting on-site surveys, staking construction sites, responding to emergency call-before-you-dig requests, and inspecting specialized sewer appurtenances - such as grease traps, grinder pumps, and sewer tie-ins to ensure strict adherence to Town regulations. In the office, the technician reviews site plans, performs complex mathematical design computations, assists with cost estimates and specifications, and maintains critical records.

The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented technical professional with strong computer skills, proficient in operating CAD software, GIS, spreadsheets, and word processing programs to draft accurate as-built drawings, sketches, and comprehensive reports. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential, as this role requires establishing and maintaining effective, courteous working relationships with Town officials, co-workers, residents, volunteers, external agencies, and the general public. Additionally, the ideal candidate demonstrates a commitment to professional growth and continuous learning.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

The skills and knowledge required would generally be acquired with an Associate’s Degree in Civil or Mechanical Engineering and three years of field and office engineering experience or five (5) years’ experience with technical training in construction and engineering fields.

Within 6 months of hire complete 2 correspondence courses in Waste Water Technology as prescribed by the Director of Planning, Development & Public Works or assigned designee.
