Job summary

Messiah Lutheran Church in South Carolina seeks a passionate Director of Music Ministry to lead worship and inspire our congregation through music rooted in Lutheran heritage and expressed in a vibrant, Christ-centered community life.

Working with the Pastor, Worship & Music Committee, and volunteers, you will plan services, recruit and develop choirs and instrumentalists, oversee tuning and licensing, and manage the annual music budget to ensure worship is excellent and welcoming.

Qualifications

• Commitment to Jesus Christ and His church.
• Experience in choral directing and conducting.
• Familiarity with Scripture, Lutheran liturgy, the Revised Common Lectionary, and the church year.
• Strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills.
• Warm, encouraging spirit; ability to work with volunteers of varied musical backgrounds.
• Proficiency in piano and/or organ.
• Experience in Lutheran or liturgical church music.
• Experience directing handbell choirs.
• Basic budgeting and administrative skills.

Responsibilities

• Worship Planning & Leadership: Provide overall leadership and accountability for worship planning, musical direction, and volunteer coordination.
• Ensemble Direction: Lead Adult Vocal Choir, Handbell Choir, and Children’s Choir; recruit and coordinate musicians.
• Stewardship of Instruments & Resources: Oversee instrument care, music library, and licensing compliance.
• Administration & Collaboration: Coordinate worship schedules and seasonal planning; manage budget; collaborate with leadership.
