TITLE: World Language Teacher

REPORTS TO: Building Principal

EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Certified

LOCATION: Decatur Middle School

Job Description:

Decatur Middle School is seeking a dynamic, student-centered World Language Instructor for grades 7 and 8. The ideal candidate is passionate about language instruction, committed to cultural competency, and holds a valid Indiana Teaching License with a World Language endorsement. This educator will develop engaging lessons that support the acquisition of a second language, promote global awareness, and build foundational communication skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

Job Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Valid Indiana Secondary Teaching License with certification in World Language (Grades 5–12) as required by the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE).
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the target languages.
  • Knowledge of best practices in second language acquisition and instruction.
  • Ability to implement world language curriculum and instruction.
  • Experience with technology integration and digital learning platforms.

Educational Responsibilities:

  • Deliver instruction in a World Language (e.g., Spanish, French, German, ASL, etc.) aligned with Indiana Academic Standards for World Languages.
  • Create a positive, inclusive, and engaging classroom environment that supports a diverse group of learners.
  • Design and implement effective lesson plans that incorporate listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.
  • Use formative and summative assessments to evaluate and document student progress.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse academic, cultural, and linguistic needs of students.
  • Integrate technology, real-world applications, and cultural content into instruction.
  • Maintain accurate records of student performance and communicate regularly with families.
  • Participate in school-wide professional learning communities (PLCs), staff meetings, and professional development opportunities.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to support interdisciplinary learning and school initiatives.
  • Uphold school policies, procedures, and expectations for student conduct and academic achievement.
  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials for the subject area, and translates lesson plans into learning experiences to develop pertinent sequential assignments, challenge students, and best utilize the available time for instruction.
  • Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning and progress, and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student's needs, including students with special needs; conducts individual and small group instruction as needed.
  • Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops, or professional meetings, or by conducting research.
  • Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement, and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
  • Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
  • Ensures that student conduct conforms to the school's standards and school district policies, and establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
  • Coordinates with other professional staff members, especially within grade level, and participates in faculty meetings and committees.
