Job summary

NIIC National Interstate Insurance Company seeks a California Senior Workers' Comp Claims Specialist to manage complex claims, determine liability and negotiate settlements. You will lead investigations, coordinate coverage decisions, and supervise staff as needed in a high-stakes environment.

Required are a Bachelor’s degree in a related field, 13+ years of P&C claims experience, and strong analytical, negotiation, and communication skills.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in business, risk management, or related field; professional designation preferred (AIC).
• Minimum 13 years of property and casualty claims handling experience.
• Expert knowledge of insurance policies, coverage and claims procedures.

Responsibilities

• Manages a large inventory of highly complex claims to evaluate compensability/liability.
• Leads investigations to confirm coverage and determine liability and damages.
• Analyzes and negotiates settlements and reserves within authority.
• May attend arbitrations, mediations or trials.
• Communicates coverage and settlements clearly to insureds, claimants and partners.
• Authorizes payments within authority limits and ensures timely disbursement.
• Maintains detailed claim files with all correspondence and reports.
• May mentor staff and participate in talent decisions for direct reports.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

• Manages a large inventory of highly complex claims to evaluate compensability/liability.
• Strategically orchestrates and leads comprehensive claims investigations to confirm coverage and to determine liability, compensability and damages.
• Analyzes and negotiates appropriate claim settlements/reserves within prescribed authority.
• May attend arbitrations, mediations, depositions, or trials.
• Conveys highly complex information regarding coverage and settlements to insureds, claimants, and external partners.
• Authorizes payments in accordance with assigned authority limit, ensuring timely disbursement.
• Maintains accurate and detailed claim files, including all correspondence, reports, and settlement agreements.
• May have responsibility for performance and coaching of staff and may have a participatory role in decisions regarding talent selection, development, and performance management for direct reports.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

• Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Risk Management and Insurance, Finance, or a related field or equivalent experience.
• Experience: Generally, a minimum of 13 years of experience in property and casualty claims handling.
• Completion of or continuing progress toward a professional designation preferred, such as Associate in Claims (AIC).
• Prefer CA Work Comp Experience
• Scope of Job/Qualifications: Works at the highest authority limits on assignments of the highest technical complexity and coordination.
• Excellent analytical, negotiation, and problem-solving skills.
• Demonstrates expert knowledge of insurance policies, coverage, and claims handling procedures.
• Maintains and leverages knowledge of industry laws and regulations.
• Advanced ability to organize and prioritize caseloads, ensuring timely resolution of claims.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build relationships and lead negotiations.
• Proven ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
• Recognized as a subject matter expert within the company, potentially operating at a peer level to management.

Salary Range: $95,000.00 -$105,000.00
