Job summary

Hands of Heartland is seeking a Work Skills Instructor to teach, coach, and support individuals as they develop practical, vocational, and interpersonal workplace skills.

You will blend instruction with hands-on training to help learners meet IEP employment goals and transition to competitive or supported employment settings. Ideal candidates have background in workforce development and disability services and can adapt to diverse learning styles.

Qualifications

  • Experience in workforce development, education, vocational training, human services, or related fields.
  • Experience working with individuals with disabilities or barriers to employment.
  • Knowledge of adult learning principles and instructional strategies.
  • Familiarity with vocational rehabilitation programs, supported employment, or community based training.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver engaging instruction on workplace readiness topics such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, time management, and professional behavior.
  • Teach work skills aligned with program goals (e.g., customer service, problem solving, safety procedures, and completing assigned tasks to set standards).
  • Assess learners’ abilities and create individualized accommodations based on strengths, needs, and employment goals.
  • Provide hands-on coaching in classroom and work environments.
  • Model and reinforce professional expectations, including punctuality, dress, workplace etiquette, and task completion.
  • Track learners’ progress, maintain accurate documentation, and prepare reports for IEP teams, case managers, and/or partner agencies.
  • Collaborate with employers, vocational rehabilitation counselors, job coaches, and other stakeholders.
  • Adapt instruction for diverse learning styles, including individuals with disabilities, language barriers, or limited work experience.
  • Ensure a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment that promotes growth and independence.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Summary

Education & Experience

  • Experience in workforce development, education, vocational training, human services, or related fields.

  • Must possess well-developed interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with all levels of staff inside and outside the organization.
  • Skilled in organization, time management, communication, and positive interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent skills in verbal and written communication.
  • Ability to understand the individual needs of each student.
  • Must have sufficient knowledge of computer systems (Word, Excel and Outlook)
  • Extensive knowledge of accepted standards of practice and ability to provide instruction and direction.
  • Displays a significant degree of professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and special education students.

Essential Functions/Physical Requirements

Good hearing and visual skills; ability to bend, stoop, sit, stand, reach, and lift up to 25 pounds.
