WORK-BASED LEARNING COORDINATOR – SURGICAL TECHNOLOGY

This position plans and develops clinical education experiences forthe clinical phase in an Allied Health/Career Program. The positionmonitors supervised clinical practice experiences and modifies themas necessary to ensure expected learning outcomes will be met byeach student by program completion.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Student Evaluations and Related Activities:
- Evaluates students’ clinical performance, competence, andknowledge in different areas of the medical field, botheducationally and through on-site performance.
- Scores and writes reports of evaluations and final examinations.Communicates results to students and program director.
- Discusses performance with faculty and administrators in additionto clinical preceptors, for further understanding of the student’sdevelopment.
- Maintains links with clinical preceptors, health careinstitutions, and other agencies involved in the clinical phase ofthe program.
- Provides clinical instruction and professional and academiccounsel to students.
- Performs periodic review and updates course materials.
- Assures the availability of remedial instruction forstudents.
Operational Duties:
- Verifies syllabi and lesson plans are appropriately mapped tocurriculum.
- Develops and optimizes online study materials to aid ininstruction and reports.
- Prepares reports on student use of online study materials.
- Orients instructors and preceptors to ensure student learningoutcomes and expected educational competencies are communicated toinstructors and scheduled for students.
- Defines and maintains consistent and effective processes for theinitial and ongoing evaluation of all sites and preceptors used forstudents’ clinical practice experiences, using comparableevaluation processes to clinical sites regardless of geographiclocation.
- Monitors clinical rotations to ensure instructors and preceptorsare fulfilling student learning outcomes.
- Monitors supervised clinical practice experiences and modifies asnecessary to ensure expected learning outcomes will be met by eachstudent by program completion.
- Coordinates with clinical instructors to ensure documentation ofstudent demonstration of defined professional behaviors and toensure student assessment, evaluations, various documentations andgrades are properly obtained, complete, accurate andreported.
Program Administration:
- Establishes the clinical rotation schedule for all clinicalstudents using established network of clinical sites.
- Develops new/additional sites for program as necessary.
- Coordinates student schedules with other institutions.
- Performs clinical site evaluations as part of contractrenewal.
- Writes qualitative evaluations of site.
- Updates and/or renews contracts as appropriate.
- Collects data and prepares reports on clinical sites forinclusion in accreditation, grants, colleges, and other hospitaldocuments.
- Ensures all student records are complete and accurate.
- Participates in self-study process.
- Maintains documentation to verify student learning outcomes arebeing achieved.
- Prepares student packets for preceptors to inform them ofexpected student learning outcomes and facilitate communicationwith student, instructors and college.
- Ensures and documents that each clinical site provides thestudent access to physical facilities, patient populations andsupervision necessary to fulfill the program’s expectations of theclinical experience.
- Prepares reports on qualitative evaluation of sites for inclusionin accreditation, grant applications, college, hospital and otherprogram documents.
- Promotes and recruits interested individuals into theprogram.
Student Guidance and Counsel:
- Guides and counsels students to help them achieve the bestresults of the program.
- Assists students in their professional developments. Ensures thatstudents are informed of additional services to assist themthroughout the program.
- Provides students with additional information regarding nationalcertification, licensure, and clinical privileges, processes, andpolicies.
- Holds discussions with students to discuss educational and/orcareer development as appropriate.
Program Development:
- Develops, schedules, and implements professional practice seminars to assist students in improving clinical knowledge andcompetencies and professional conduct.
- Assists students in preparing for national certificationexaminations through a variety of methods customized to thestudent.
- Maintains medical program certification and licensure ordoctorate licensure as required by accreditation review committees(ARC).
- Maintains clinical, teaching, scholarly and administrativeprofessional development as required by ARC.
Recruiting and Strategic Planning:
- Participates in open-house programs for individuals interested inthe PA program.
- Meets with individuals to discuss the process of applying in theprogram and the necessary requirements to be admitted.
- Reviews and interviews applicants to the program; selectsapplicants for admission to the medical program.
- Meets with applicants not selected to advise and counsel forfuture admission.
- Develops, reviews, and revises as necessary the mission statementfor the program.
- Evaluates the program and participates in action plans andtimelines for implementation of changes, reevaluating changes andongoing analysis.
- Develops new or additional clinical and didactic year preceptorsites as necessary.
- Attends departmental meetings, interdepartmental meetings,College-wide meetings, city wide meetings, course preparation, andother professional duties.
- Adheres to CCC Customer Service Excellence standards.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Be a graduate of an education program in Surgical Technologyaccredited by a nationally recognized programmatic accreditationagency; and
- Possess a credential in the field of surgical technology througha national certification program that is accredited by the NationalCommission on Certifying Agencies (NCCA); and
- Have a minimum of three years of documented experience, eitherin the operating room scrub role or as an instructor in surgicaltechnology, or a combination of both, within the past five years;and
- Possess knowledge of the curriculum; and
- Possess knowledge about the program’s evaluation of studentlearning and performance.
- Associate degree in Surgical Technology required; Bachelor’sdegree preferred. At least 3 years’ experience in a health careenvironment for individuals possessing an Associate’s degree; 2years in a health care environment with completion of a Bachelor’sdegree. Additional experience in a clinical setting and/orexperience in an academic setting preferred.
- Above average verbal and written communication required. Abilityto communicate complicated information to varied audiences. Mustconduct interactions in a polite and courteous manner.
- Ability to maintain confidential information on the program andstudent records.
- Proficiency in various software programs including wordprocessing, spreadsheet applications, and databasemanagement.
- Must be self-directed and able to prioritize work. Must be ableto meet deadlines in a timely manner. In addition, must be able toparticipate and interact as a team player on many projectsthroughout the City Colleges of Chicago District.
- Must be able to work varied hours which may include eveningand/or weekends.
Salary Range: $81,085 - $89,194
Offered salary will be determined by the respective collectivebargaining agreement and applicant's education, experience,knowledge, skills and abilities.
