Job summary

Position Summary:

The Work-Based Learning (WBL) Coordinator designs, coordinates, and manages a district-wide continuum of work-based learning experiences that connect students to meaningful employer partnerships and real-world career opportunities. This position serves students across all CTE programs in the Alamance-Burlington School System, working in collaboration with Career Development Coordinators, CTE teachers, and community and industry partners.

This role is employer-facing and opportunity-focused. The WBL Coordinator builds and manages the employer relationships and placement opportunities that make WBL possible. The WBL Coordinator works alongside CDCs to ensure placement opportunities align with student career plans.

The goal of this role is to expand student access to high-quality work-based learning experiences by building and sustaining employer and community partnerships, identifying and developing a district-wide continuum of WBL placement opportunities, and ensuring all placements meet state and federal requirements.

Regular travel to employer and community partner sites is expected. A valid North Carolina driver’s license must be maintained throughout employment.

Qualifications

  • Holds or is eligible for a North Carolina 747 Career Development Coordinator or 749 Career Development Facilitator license

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; background in Career and Technical Education, school counseling, or career counseling preferred
  • Experience planning and coordinating work-based learning programs (internships, job shadowing, apprenticeships) preferred
  • Experience building and maintaining partnerships with employers, businesses, and community organizations

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong ability to build effective, collaborative relationships with employers, educators, and community stakeholders
  • Excellent communication, organization, and project coordination skills
  • Knowledge of WBL models, North Carolina WBL requirements, and employer engagement strategies
  • Proficiency in digital tools for data management, documentation, and communication
  • Knowledge of current workforce trends, labor market data, and in-demand industries in the Alamance County region
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent partnerships and placement opportunities across schools and program areas
  • Valid North Carolina driver’s license required
Major Functions and Duties
  • Work-Based Learning Opportunity Development and Coordination
    • Identify, develop, and maintain a district-wide continuum of work-based learning opportunities including job shadowing, internships, cooperative education, and apprenticeships
    • Work with CDCs and CTE teachers to identify students ready for WBL experiences and connect them to appropriate placement opportunities aligned with their CTE pathway and career plan
    • Ensure all WBL placements meet North Carolina state requirements and federal Perkins V compliance standards
    • Maintain employer-level and program-level documentation including partnership agreements, training plans, and WBL opportunity records
    • Student supervision during WBL experiences and student-level documentation are the responsibility of Career Development Coordinators
  • Employer and Community Partnership Development
    • Recruit, cultivate, and sustain partnerships with local, regional, and industry employers to expand WBL opportunities for students
    • Serve as the primary point of contact for employer and community partners engaged in WBL activities
    • Engage volunteers, guest speakers, mentors, and sponsors to support student career readiness and extended learning opportunities
    • Represent ABSS CTE at external meetings, employer convenings, and community partner events as directed by the Director
    • Maintain a current database of active employer and community partners, contact information, and partnership agreements
  • Industry-Partner Event Coordination
    • Plan and coordinate district-level career-connected events including career fairs, employer site visits, job shadow days, and industry panels
    • Recruit and confirm employer and community participants for all district WBL events
    • Collaborate with the Program Support Specialist for event logistics and marketing support
  • Data Management and Reporting
    • Maintain accurate records of employer partnerships, WBL placement opportunities, and program-level participation and outcome data
    • Use digital tools to manage, track, and report WBL program data to the Director and relevant stakeholders
    • Assist the Director with WBL-related Perkins V reporting and CLNA documentation as needed
    • Monitor labor market and workforce trend data to inform WBL programming and employer outreach priorities
  • Collaboration and Professional Development
    • Collaborate with Career Development Coordinators to identify appropriate WBL placement opportunities for students and ensure alignment with student career plans — in a peer, not supervisory, capacity
    • Collaborate with CTE teachers to identify students ready for WBL experiences and ensure alignment with program coursework
    • Stay current on workforce trends, WBL best practices, and state and federal WBL requirements through professional development
    • Participate in CTE department meetings and other activities as directed by the Director
Minimum Qualifications or Standards Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
