The USA TODAY NETWORK is seeking a sports editor to lead coverage of college and professional women’s sports, among other topics, for the nation’s largest media organization.

The successful candidate will create a vision for taking advantage of the meteoric national interest in women’s sports, from creation of reader experiences to content strategies that rapidly grow and then retain readers. This role is fully remote and ideal for someone raring to be part of a winning team, with a knack for anticipating audience needs and coaching reporters to grow readership through breaking news, relentless ideation and exceptional planning.

The ability to use modern metrics, including Parse.ly, to track readership growth is required. Comfort articulating content plans to sales, marketing and content partners is a must.

The editor will play a leading role in growing women’s sports coverage across the network footprint, which includes more than 200 local sites in addition to USA TODAY.

Responsibilities :

  • Lead women’s sports coverage for the network, with most coverage appearing on USA TODAY. Coach writers to create compelling content that goes beyond the box score, applying judgment as a journalist to ensure accuracy, clarity and high standards.
  • Play a leading role in creating new experiences that makes the USA TODAY Network the nation’s mandatory stop for women’s sports coverage.
  • Collaborate with editors and other team members across USA TODAY Network to ensure timely, accurate reporting, and maximize sales opportunities.
  • Continuously learn and implement new techniques to enhance reporting efficiency and meet or exceed productivity expectations.
  • Maintain Gannett’s high standard of journalistic integrity and ethical reporting.
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of journalistic principles and practices and a working knowledge of media law.

Requirements :

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or equivalent field. Equivalent work experience welcomed.
  • 5+ years of journalism experience, including work that targets mass audiences.
  • Strong understanding of journalistic principles and practices.
  • Excellent working knowledge of relevant media law and adherence to the Editors’ Code of Conduct are vital to fulfilling the functions of the role.
  • Creativity and innovation, with a willingness to experiment with new approaches and techniques.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment and manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Basic interview skills, with experience in a newsroom or similar environment.
  • Strong writing and editing abilities, with attention to detail.
  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to meet tight deadlines.
  • A proactive, self-motivated attitude with a commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Be the ultimate team player.

What We Offer :

  • Competitive salary and benefits package.
  • A collaborative and supportive team environment.
  • Continuous learning and professional development opportunities.
  • The chance to be at the forefront of the evolving media landscape.
