Job summary

The State of Indiana through the Indiana Department of Transportation is seeking Seasonal Winter Maintenance Workers in Bloomington. You will operate snow plows and related equipment, perform highway maintenance, and help keep roadways safe during winter weather.

A CDL is required and the position pays $21.00 per hour. The role is seasonal (up to 180 working days) with potential signing and retention bonuses tied to start dates and duration of service.

Qualifications

• High school graduate or HSE preferred.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Class A or B CDL.
• Required to submit to and pass a drug test as a condition of employment.
• Must have the ability to move 50 pounds.
• Must have the ability to perform physical activities such as lifting, dragging, stooping, standing, and walking for long periods of time.
• Must have the ability to endure exposure to inclement weather.
• Must have the ability to operate specialty traffic equipment (e.g. bucket trucks, paint equipment, etc.).
• Must have the ability to follow directions and work as part of a team.
• Must have the ability to work unpredictable and non-traditional hours as necessary to perform winter operations activities.

Responsibilities

• Operate basic highway maintenance equipment to maintain, repair, and clean highways and right-of-way.
• Move and load supplies and materials.
• Winter operation duties including snow and ice removal.
• Perform emergency response activities such as: clean-up, traffic control, lane closures, placement of signs, and erecting barricades.
• Perform equipment maintenance such as: minor repairs, preventative maintenance, refueling, and pre-trip inspections.
• Comply with INDOT Safety Policies and Procedures.
• Perform job documentation tasks such as entry into the Work Management System (WMS).

Role Overview:

This position is responsible for performing general highway maintenance duties that keep INDOT assets in good working condition to ensure customer satisfaction. Seasonal Winter Program Workers perform snow and ice removal and related maintenance duties by operation of snow plow, and other winter operations duties as required. Traffic maintenance duties such as repairing and installing traffic signs and pavement markings are also required job duties for this position. A CDL is required for this position.

Retention Bonus:

A $500 retention bonus offered to Winter Seasonal Maintenance Worker working full-time hired on or before 12/7/26 who stay through 3/27/27.

Pay Rate:

This position pays an hourly rate of $21.00.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:
