Position Overview

The Winter Seasonal Plow Operator is a temporary, seasonal position responsible for operating snowplow and de-icing equipment to keep roads safe and passable during winter storm events. This role involves operating plows, salt and sand spreaders, and related equipment under supervision, with a focus on rapid, safe response during snow and ice events.The operator will monitor weather and road conditions, respond promptly to winter storm callouts, and perform basic equipment checks and maintenance to keep vehicles ready for service. Additional duties include reporting road hazards, following all safety regulations, and working as part of a team to keep roadways clear throughout the winter season. This position is seasonal and ends when winter operations conclude for the year.

Key Responsibilities

1. Snow and Ice Removal:
   • Operate snowplows, salt spreaders, and sanders to clear and treat roadways during winter storm events, under supervision.
   • Monitor weather forecasts and road conditions, and respond promptly to storm callouts, including outside of regular business hours.
   • Apply salt, sand, and other de-icing materials to roadways according to established procedures.
   • Be available for flexible and irregular work schedules, including nights, weekends, and holidays, based on weather conditions.
2. Equipment Operation and Maintenance:
   • Learn to safely operate plow trucks and related winter maintenance equipment.
   • Perform pre- and post-shift equipment checks, including fluid levels, tire pressure, plow blades, and spreader function.
   • Report any mechanical issues or equipment damage to the maintenance team promptly.
3. Road Safety and Hazard Reporting:
   • Report hazardous road conditions, such as ice buildup, downed signs, or debris, to supervisors.
   • Respond to emergency winter road conditions as directed.
   • Work with team members and supervisors to prioritize routes based on storm severity and road conditions.
4. Time and Job Tracking:
   • Document completed routes, materials used, and hours worked as directed.
   • Follow assigned schedules and dispatch instructions from supervisors.
   • Maintain basic records of work activities.
5. Safety and Compliance:
   • Follow all safety guidelines and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
   • Attend training on equipment operation and winter driving safety.
   • Report any unsafe conditions, near-misses, or hazards to supervisors.

Qualifications

• Willingness to work outdoors in extreme cold, snow, and hazardous winter conditions.
• Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team.
• Ability to work flexible, on-call hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays during storm events.
• Must have a valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

• Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or willingness to obtain one.
• Previous experience operating trucks, plows, or heavy equipment.
• Previous experience in outdoor labor or winter road maintenance is helpful but not required.
