Job summary

Yellowstone Club in Big Sky, MT seeks a Winter Maintenance Operator for the upcoming season (Nov–Apr). This seasonal, full-time role focuses on safe snow removal, terrain grooming, and ice rink maintenance to keep guest areas accessible and pristine throughout the winter.

You will operate snowplows, snow blowers, Zamboni-like machines, perform routine plowing, de-icing, and light repairs, with on-call shifts and holiday hours.

Qualifications

  • Experience operating heavy equipment such as snowplows, skid steer, snowcats and ice resurfacers.
  • Physical stamina to perform demanding tasks outdoors in winter.

Responsibilities

  • Operate snowplows, spreaders, snow blowers, and ice resurfacing machines to clear and maintain winter surfaces.
  • Perform routine snow removal on designated roads, driveways, parking lots, sidewalks, and walkways.
  • Apply de-icing agents like salt, sand, or brine to treat surfaces and prevent ice buildup.
  • Groom snowshoe and cross-country trails using snowmobiles with specialized attachments to maintain high-quality snow conditions.
  • Maintain ice rinks by resurfacing, edging, cleaning, and repairing the ice surface to specified standards.
  • Perform minor emergency repairs and preventative maintenance on equipment.
  • Ensure all work is performed in compliance with safety procedures and PPE.
  • Work collaboratively with other team members to meet deadlines and respond to emergency situations.

Yellowstone Club’s Golf Course Maintenance department is currently seeking candidates for a Winter Maintenance Operator for the upcoming Winter season! Our Winter employment months are November through April.

Purpose:

The Winter Maintenance Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient execution of snow removal, terrain grooming, and ice rink maintenance. The role involves operating and performing minor maintenance on heavy equipment, ensuring that all managed roads, trails, parking areas, and ice surfaces are safe and functional for guests and residents. Operators must monitor weather conditions and be prepared to respond promptly to weather events, which may require working early mornings, late nights, or during holidays.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Operate a variety of equipment, including snowplows, spreaders, snow blowers, and ice resurfacing machines (e.g., Zamboni), to clear and maintain winter surfaces.
  • Perform routine snow removal on designated roads, driveways, parking lots, sidewalks, and walkways to ensure safe passage.
  • Apply de-icing agents like salt, sand, or brine to treat surfaces and prevent ice buildup.
  • Groom snowshoe and cross-country trails using snowmobiles with specialized attachments (e.g., tillers, blades) to maintain high-quality snow conditions.
  • Maintain ice rinks by resurfacing, edging, cleaning, and repairing the ice surface to specified standards.
  • Perform minor emergency repairs and preventative maintenance on equipment.
  • Ensure all work is performed in compliance with safety procedures and protocols, including the use of proper personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Work collaboratively with other team members to meet deadlines and respond to emergency situations.

Experience/Education Required

  • Experience operating heavy equipment: Proven experience with machinery such as snowplows, skid steer, snowcats, and ice resurfacers is strongly preferred. On-the-job training may be provided.
  • Physical stamina: Ability to perform physically demanding tasks for extended periods, such as shoveling, lifting up to 50 lbs., and working outdoors in extreme weather conditions.
  • Adaptability: Must be able to work flexible hours, including early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays, and adapt to changing weather conditions and work schedules.
  • Communication skills: Ability to follow both written and verbal instructions and communicate effectively with supervisors and team members.

Certificates & Licenses

  • Valid driver's license: A clean driving record is required; some positions may require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

Reasoning Ability

  • Mechanical aptitude: Basic knowledge of vehicle and equipment maintenance, including the ability to perform pre-trip inspections and light repair work.
  • Strong attention to detail: Ability to maintain a high level of concentration and precision while operating machinery.
  • Outdoor Conditions: Work is performed primarily outdoors in all types of winter weather, including snow, wind, and extremely cold temperatures, which may drop as low as -30°F.
  • Variable Hours: The work schedule is variable and dependent on weather events, requiring availability for on-call shifts, early mornings, late nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Team-Oriented Culture: The operator works as part of a close-knit team where communication, reliability, and support for fellow team members are critical for safety and success. Operators must be capable of working both independently and collaboratively to achieve operational goals.

Physical Demands

The position requires standing, walking, bending, and kneeling on uneven, icy, or snowy terrain. Employees must be prepared for extended periods of machine operation and some physical labor, including lifting heavy objects.
