Job summary

Jobtailor is seeking an on-site Facility Support Specialist for the Crary Science and Engineering Center during the winter season. You will coordinate safety, space planning, and lab operations while collaborating with off-site staff for summer projects.

Responsibilities include inspections, sample tracking, and creating SOPs, with an emphasis on safety, compliance, and effective communication in a research setting. U.S. citizenship and Public Trust clearance are required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a science field with 2–4 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in a research environment providing direct support to science events/projects.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal communication, and public speaking skills.
  • Ability to execute projects and requests without supervision.
  • U.S. Citizenship and ability to obtain Public Trust clearance required.
  • Remote field work and/or polar experience preferred.
  • Must complete physical and dental examinations required by NSF for Antarctic deployment.

Job description

  • Serve as on-site Point of Contact for the Crary Science and Engineering Center during the winter season
  • Work with off-site staff to prepare for upcoming summer science projects
  • Act as science liaison and coordinate facility inspections, tours, and work orders/tasking
  • Ensure laboratory users maintain safe laboratory practices under the Chemical Hygiene Plan
  • Orient users to facility safety expectations, emergency procedures, and primary hazards
  • Conduct routine laboratory inspections
  • Plan, allocate, and adapt laboratory resources and equipment for science teams
  • Coordinate intra- and intercontinental science sample movements
  • Prepare weekly and end-of-season status reports
  • Create and update Standard Operating Procedures
  • Clean, organize, and prepare laboratories, offices, aquarium facilities, loading docks, staging spaces, cold storage rooms, conference rooms, and common-use areas
  • Monitor and maintain cold storage rooms, chemical storage rooms, and shared-use areas
  • Manage inventory and tracking of samples, equipment, and resources
  • Brief agencies and ASC departments on current research and provide laboratory facility tours
  • Monitor the Duty Pager and remain on-call 24/7 for alarms throughout the winter season
  • Provide input on improvements to laboratory spaces and associated systems
  • Maintain facility entrances and exits for safe egress
  • Support hazardous-materials receipt, inventory, use, and disposal activities
  • Assist with segregation and packaging of laboratory solid waste
  • Monitor use of radioisotopes and radiation-producing equipment by approved groups
  • Provide cryogen support
  • Test, maintain, and calibrate equipment and instrumentation as requested
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in a science field, and 2–4 years of prior relevant experience
  • Additional years of experience considered in lieu of degree
  • Experience in a research environment providing direct support to science events/projects required
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal communication, and public speaking skills
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Ability to execute projects and requests without supervision
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications
  • Must complete physical and dental examinations required by the National Science Foundation for Antarctic deployment
  • U.S. Citizenship required
  • Must obtain a Public Trust security clearance prior to start date
  • Remote field work and/or polar experience preferred
