GENERAL SUMMARY

A special education classroom teacher performs under the general direction of the building principal or program manager and with assistance from appropriate staff personnel. The teacher fosters an effective learning environment, establishes and adapts learning objectives and standards for special education students based on district guidelines and regulations, provides instruction, counseling, discipline, supervision, and evaluates student performance and progress.

  1. 40% - Fosters an educational environment conducive to the learning and maturation of assigned students; plans instructional programs tailored to individual needs; prepares lesson plans; modifies programs as necessary.
  2. 15% - Uses appropriate instructional methods and materials suited to students' well-being and learning activities; implements curriculum objectives; engages in professional development to stay current.
  3. 10% - Establishes classroom policies and procedures for behavior; provides guidance and discipline; makes referrals for assistance.
  4. 5% - Confers with students, parents, guardians, specialists, and staff to provide guidance, evaluation, and encourage achievement.
  5. 10% - Sets classroom goals aligned with individual education programs; evaluates and records progress; reports to parents.
  6. 5% - Manages activities of non-certificated personnel; attends to students' physical, emotional, behavioral, medical, and hygienic needs; monitors conditions and behaviors.
  7. 10% - Collects and interprets data; develops and evaluates IEPs; provides reports; updates documents as needed.
  8. 5% - Participates in staff meetings and activities for objectives and professional growth.
OTHER FUNCTIONS
  • Serves on staff committees.
  • Participates in activities to enhance skills.
  • Performs related tasks as appropriate.
  • Attends annual Special Education Compliance PD days.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to the building Principal.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of subject areas, behavior management, instructional techniques, safety rules, and special education regulations. Skills in communication, lesson planning, curriculum adaptation, and managing diverse student needs. Ability to positively interact with students, families, and staff; adapt to change; organize activities; manage behavior; and maintain a safe environment.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Dealing with diverse student achievement and behavior, handling multiple tasks, occasional interruptions, exposure to infectious diseases, physical demands for demonstrating techniques, and possibly moving or restraining students.

Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree and experience in teaching diverse populations, with additional requirements depending on specific programs.

Licenses/Special Requirements

Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate with Special Education Endorsement; some positions require first aid, CPR, or a driver’s license.
