A special education classroom teacher at a leading educational institution in Seattle is responsible for creating an effective learning environment tailored to the needs of special education students. The role includes planning lessons, managing classroom behavior, and collaborating with parents and specialists. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in special education, excellent communication skills, and the ability to adapt to diverse student needs.
A special education classroom teacher performs under the general direction of the building principal or program manager and with assistance from appropriate staff personnel. The teacher fosters an effective learning environment, establishes and adapts learning objectives and standards for special education students based on district guidelines and regulations, provides instruction, counseling, discipline, supervision, and evaluates student performance and progress.
Reports to the building Principal.
Knowledge of subject areas, behavior management, instructional techniques, safety rules, and special education regulations. Skills in communication, lesson planning, curriculum adaptation, and managing diverse student needs. Ability to positively interact with students, families, and staff; adapt to change; organize activities; manage behavior; and maintain a safe environment.
Dealing with diverse student achievement and behavior, handling multiple tasks, occasional interruptions, exposure to infectious diseases, physical demands for demonstrating techniques, and possibly moving or restraining students.
Bachelor's degree and experience in teaching diverse populations, with additional requirements depending on specific programs.
Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate with Special Education Endorsement; some positions require first aid, CPR, or a driver’s license.
