Department Summary

The Center for Anatomical Sciences at the University of North Texas Health Science Center is located in the prestigious Cultural District of Fort Worth, Texas. Our mission is to offer exceptional educational activities and to advance research in the anatomical sciences and allied fields.

Research strengths in the Center for Anatomical Sciences include biological anthropology, evolutionary biology, forensic sciences, biomechanics/functional morphology, and histology. The Center encompasses 8,000-square-feet of anatomy laboratories that support anatomical education, research, and outreach. The Center also houses dedicated research laboratories equipped for medical imaging analysis/morphometrics, forensic anthropology, thermoregulatory studies (environmental chamber), histology, and paleontological fossil preparation.

Center for Anatomical Sciences teaches dissection and prosection-based anatomy courses to Medical, Physical Therapy, Physician’s Assistant, and Master of Medical Science students. The Center is also home to the Structural Anatomy and Rehabilitation Sciences (STARS) PhD program that prepares graduate students to join the workforce as researchers and anatomy educators.

The Center also supports numerous K-12 science outreach programs, offering summer science camps, campus tours, and in-school events that introduce students to anatomy and its relationship to medical education.

Position Overview

The Willed Body Program Manager will work closely with Center for Anatomical Sciences leadership to ensure effective communication with key audiences (e.g., prospective donors, donor families, medical facilities), ensure the effective preparation and preservation of human cadavers, and coordinate educational/research activities in the anatomy laboratories at UNTHSC. The primary function of this job is to oversee the daily operations of the Willed Body Program in order to promote medical education and research at UNTHSC.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate's degree in Mortuary Science and four (4) years' of related experience, or Bachelor's degree in Mortuary Science and two (2) years' of related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Knowledge of anatomical embalming techniques and preservation methods

• Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and handle multiple tasks.
• Ability to train and guide staff on procedures and techniques.
• Ability maintain effective working relationships.
• Knowledge of all laws and legal requirements pertaining to Willed Body Programs in the state of Texas.
  
  

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in academia preferred.

Required License/Registration/Certifications

The applicant must be a licensed funeral director and embalmer with the State of Texas.

Job Duties

• Supervises the work of all WBP staff , issues performance reviews, and makes hiring and termination decisions.
• Oversees responses to inquiries regarding the WBP and the donation process in a timely and respectful manner through both written and oral communications.
• Oversees all aspects of the donation process including the completion of all required paperwork and communications between donor families, medico-legal personnel, and transportation staff to coordinate the transfer of donors to HSC.
• Oversees all aspects of mortuary operations including the routing of requests for laboratory events and activities through appropriate approval mechanisms and the preservation, allocation, and use of donors for approved laboratory activities. May perform detailed embalming procedures to maintain the anatomical integrity of cadavers.
• Oversees the cremation process and ensures timely and respectful return of cremated remains to donor families.
• Oversees accurate documentation of Willed Body Program activities in database; develops and implements data entry procedures; ensures data integrity and database security.
• Oversees the preparation of reports for Texas Funeral Service Commission and insures that UNTHSC is compliant with all federal, state, local, and institutional regulations.
