Job summary

The Loxahatchee River District is offering a paid Laboratory Intern position in the WildPine Laboratory, Palm Beach County, Florida. The internship lasts three months and may be part-time or full-time, with a total of fewer than 1000 hours in a calendar year.

Interns will collect water samples, free dive to monitor oysters and seagrass, assist with water quality analysis, participate in outreach events, and help prepare shells for use in research projects.

  • Participate in outreach events and retrieve recycled oyster shells for research.
  • Create, implement and evaluate their own project with staff assistance.

Job description

The Loxahatchee River District is an Independent Special District created by the Florida Legislature in 1971. It is governed by a five-member publicly elected Governing Board. We operate an award-winning facility that collects wastewater from the community and recycles it for irrigation needs, preserving fresh water supplies for the environment. By engaging the public with relevant and compelling environmental education opportunities, such as the River Center and Busch Wildlife Sanctuary, we foster stewardship among residents and visitors. As the leading authority on the Loxahatchee River, we also spearhead ongoing water quality studies and collaborate on river restoration projects.

We are dedicated to protecting public health and preserving the Loxahatchee River watershed and its natural habitats through innovative wastewater solutions, research, and environmental stewardship.

The LRD internship program is designed to integrate knowledge and theory learned in school with practical application and skills in a professional environment. Our internships are a semester (fall, spring, summer), in duration and may or may not be for school credit. These internships are paid, and they typically last three (3) months and may be part-time or full-time. All internships must be less than 1000 hours total in a calendar year.

Key Responsibilities
  • Laboratory Interns will be responsible for assisting technician’s in the operation of the WildPine Ecological Laboratory.
  • Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, collecting water samples, free diving to monitor oysters and seagrass, assisting with water quality analysis, participating in outreach events, retrieving recycled oyster shells from area restaurants, prepare shells for use in research projects.
  • Laboratory interns are also encouraged to create, implement, and evaluate their own project during their time at the Laboratory with assistance of Laboratory staff.
  • The WildPine Laboratory Intern will work varying days and hours during the internship.
