Job description

This competitive position is offered to only a few students during each session. Students are expected to have completed their final coursework - this is hands-on externship that is required by degreed programs.

During the session you'll have an opportunity to work with a wide variety of different species, we admit approximately 200 different species every year. Our center is a very high stress, high caseload hospital - we're the busiest wildlife hospital in the world. You'll be working around catastrophic injuries and will witness euthanasia daily.

You'll work alongside our vets and vet techs and learn radiology, hematology and critical care for ICU patients. It is some of the most intense hands-on experience with wildlife you can have.

We have a wide variety of people working and volunteering at the center. You'll be around people from all ethnicities and backgrounds. Acceptance of this is vital to your success in our program.

Internship Focus

  • Learn wild animal capture and restraint
  • Prepare and administer medications and subcutaneous fluids to adult patients
  • Ensure and provide proper husbandry and diet requirements, as well as enrichment
  • Assist in moving patients through the rehabilitation process
  • Assist in surgeries and procedures
  • Monitor patient anesthesia while performing radiographs
  • Perform venipuncture, fecals, crop swabs, blood chemistries, lead tests, culture and sensitivities, cytologies
  • Maintain high quality standards in medical care, including reducing stress in our patients
  • Maintain hospital cleanliness and biosecurity

Requirements

  • Open to students and graduates from an accredited Veterinary Technician Program
  • Pre-exposure rabies vaccination and a titer dated from within the past year
  • Work 40 hours per week
  • 10 week minimum (start and end dates flexible)
  • Proof of valid health insurance
  • Tetanus vaccination within the last 10 years
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends and holidays
  • Must be able to bend/stoop/crawl, stand for long periods of time and lift up to 25 lbs

Expectations

  • Appropriate career clothing to be worn: Full scrubs, closed toed shoes (a pair that can be committed to your time at WRC) and a nametag
  • Adhere to all WRC medical, safety and training procedures
  • Housing and transportation are the responsibility of student
  • Must be able to work outside in adverse weather conditions
  • Ability to handle a high rate of euthanasia
  • Ability to multi-task, pay attention to detail, work independently and be a part of the WRC team
  • Ability to remain positive and professional throughout stressful situations
