Job description

Location: Central and Southern California

Country: United States

Last Date to Apply: 03/14/2025

Axon Environmental Management (Axon) is a small growing company that provides a range of biological and water resource compliance services to private, public, and non-profit clientele in Central and Southern California. We are an enthusiastic and dedicated group who pride ourselves on delivering high quality work products that meet or exceed regulatory requirements and client expectations. Our culture is rooted in personal and professional growth, as well as maintaining a healthy work/life balance.

We are currently hiring multiple on-call wildlife biologists to conduct nesting bird surveys, rare species surveys/site clearances, and/or construction monitoring in the greater Santa Barbara, Ventura, Riverside, San Bernardino, and Los Angeles areas, with potential for other CA regions. This is an on-call hourly position with potential for 40+ hours/week based on seasonal work availability. Staff will be fully remote with the exception of project-specific site visits.

While this is a remote position, candidates should reside in either Central or Southern California (roughly Santa Barbara to San Diego County).

Requirements:
  1. B.S. in biology or natural resources with a focus on wildlife biology, avian ecology, botany, or equivalent.
  2. Ability to perform long field days in sometimes difficult terrain or acclimate weather conditions while maintaining positivity and attention to detail.
  3. Clean driving record and valid driver’s license with a reliable vehicle.
  4. Ability to communicate calmly and effectively with diverse groups.
  5. Willingness to follow detailed safety requirements, including filling out daily safety documentation, wearing personal protective equipment, adhering to client-specific safety protocols that may vary from day to day, and maintaining personal vehicle in safe operating order.
  6. Willingness to attend weekly team conference calls.
  7. Exceptional accountability for timelines and deliverables (i.e., ability to follow through on agreed upon tasks in a timely manner).

In addition, preference will be given to candidates with the following:

  1. Professional experience or strong personal interest in identifying birds by sight and sound, especially nesting behavior.
  2. At least one (1) year of professional field experience conducting general or focused biological surveys and/or construction monitoring in Central or Southern California.
  3. Familiarity with other common/rare plant and wildlife species of Central and Southern California.
  4. Federal or state permits to survey for and handle ESA/CESA-listed species.
  5. A 4x4 vehicle or consistent/unconditional access to one (does not include all wheel drive vehicles).
  6. Strong ethics regarding environmental conservation and personal/professional integrity.
  7. Experience conducting habitat suitability assessments for special-status wildlife species (training available if lacking).
  8. Familiarity with vegetation classification schemes, including Sensitive Natural Communities.
  9. Ability to use dichotomous treatments to identify plants to species.
  10. Experience with jurisdictional water resource delineation.
  11. Experience with common resource mapping hardware/software.
  12. Experience with technical writing.

Successful candidates will need to pass pre-employment background and DMV checks to meet safe vehicle operation requirements.

Hourly pay range: $20 to $40, but negotiable based on credentials and experience.
Potential for health benefits and 401(k) after six months depending on work availability and utilization.
Virtual interviews will be held on an ongoing basis until positions are filled.

This is an employee position, not a 1099 contract, so travel time is paid and mileage is reimbursed with some rare exceptions.
