Job description

Join to apply for the Wildlife Biologist role at John Hancock.

This position is part of the Environment and Policy Support Team (EPST), providing environmental and policy support to farming and forestry operations across North America. The team focuses on Environmental Certification, Environmental Services, and Policy & Engagement. The role is within the Environmental Services team, responsible for ensuring regulatory compliance, forest policy coordination, stewardship program implementation, and managing wildlife, fish, water quality, and other environmental attributes. The emphasis is on supporting operations in the Midwest, Northeast, and Southeastern US.

Location: This role offers a remote working arrangement; however, the ideal candidate should reside near an established Manulife Investment Management Timberland & Agriculture (MIMTA) field office in the eastern US.

Position Responsibilities
  1. Provide wildlife, fisheries, biodiversity, and other environmental technical support to ensure compliance with regulations.
  2. Support certification programs and implement stewardship initiatives, including SFI.
  3. Coordinate wildlife surveys and biodiversity monitoring for farm and forestry operations.
  4. Facilitate cooperative research projects on managed properties.
  5. Incorporate research and monitoring findings into management practices.
  6. Develop relationships with peers, agencies, conservation groups, and stakeholders.
  7. Serve as liaison with wildlife agencies.
  8. Provide technical input on wildlife and environmental issues related to acquisitions and revenue sources.
  9. Adhere to company policies and participate in safety programs.
  10. Handle special projects as needed.
  11. Travel regionally and occasionally nationally.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in agriculture, forestry, or natural resources with 5+ years of experience.
  • Knowledge of wildlife management, farm and forest operations, and relevant laws in North America.
  • Ability to work effectively in both office and field settings; farm experience is a plus.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for working with diverse internal and external stakeholders.
  • Sound judgment and attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational skills and multitasking ability.
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Highly motivated, entrepreneurial, and customer-focused.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with conservation projects, grants, and report writing.
  • Proficiency in GIS and mapping software.
  • Bilingual in Spanish is a plus.
