Job summary

Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife in Aberdeen, WA seeks a Wildlife Area Assistant Manager (Biologist 2) to plan, perform, and lead habitat, species, and recreation projects on the Olympic-Willapa Hills Wildlife Area.

You will assess wildlife populations, monitor habitats, coordinate with partners, maintain facilities, and report findings to support adaptive management. Telework may be available, but on-site reporting is required.

Qualifications

  • Five (5) years of professional experience in fish/wildlife/habitat management or research.
  • Bachelor's degree in wildlife management, wildlife biology, wildlife ecology, natural resource science, or environmental science.
  • One (1) year of professional experience in fish/wildlife/habitat management or research.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • CDL within 2 years of hire; First aid and Wilderness First Aid within 6 months; Pesticide applicators license within 1 year of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, performs, or assigns management activities on wildlife, plants, and habitat on wildlife areas; determines sampling design and conducts investigations.
  • Assesses wildlife populations and habitat conditions; surveys and monitors native and invasive species and habitats; recommends best management practices.
  • Coordinate habitat management actions with Lands Division staff, regional staff and external partners.
  • Develop and implement vegetation management using mechanical and chemical methods; operate land management equipment.
  • Assist with development and updates of Wildlife Area Plans and related habitat, restoration and recreation plans.
  • Conduct studies, field reviews and monitoring to evaluate management effectiveness and inform adaptive decisions.
  • Operate, maintain, and repair vehicles, equipment, and infrastructure related to land and habitat management.
  • Communicate with neighbors, stakeholders, permit holders, and the public regarding Wildlife Area activities.
