Job summary

The U.S. Department of the Interior's Wildland Fire Service is seeking a Wildland Firefighter (Assistant Engine Captain) to lead and participate in suppression, monitoring, and post-fire operations across multiple California locations.

You will assess weather and terrain, coordinate hose lays, and potentially act as an Initial Attack Incident Commander on incidents. The position requires federal suitability, a valid driver's license, and willingness to travel and work non-standard hours.

Qualifications

• Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
• Background investigation required for suitability.
• Direct Deposit required; must submit to a drug test prior to appointment.
• Random drug testing may be conducted.
• Must pass a pre-employment medical examination and may be subject to post-employment medical examinations.
• Must pass the work capacity test for arduous positions.
• Incumbent must operate government/motor vehicles; valid state driver's license required; CDL may be required.
• If applicable, obtain Commercial Driver's License within 1 year and submit driving records.
• Submit certified driving records from all states.
• One-year probationary period required; fitness and public interest considerations evaluated.
• Must be 18+ and meet maximum age requirements.
• May be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work; may travel overnight.
• Must obtain a government charge card for travel and may need travel/purchasing authority.

Responsibilities

• Directs the operation of wildland fire suppression, monitoring, and post-fire activities.
• Starts pump engine, primes pump, adjusts engine speed and pump valves, lays hose, uses nozzle.
• Conducts crew proficiency checks and drills, safety sessions, and fire critiques.
• May serve as Initial Attack Incident Commander on wildland fires and all-risk incidents.
• Gathers weather, topography, fuel types, and fire behavior to respond to incidents.
