Duties
  1. Directs wildland fire suppression, monitoring, and post-fire activities.
  2. Operates fire suppression equipment, including starting pump engines, laying hoses, and using nozzles.
  3. Maintains specialized wildland firefighting equipment.
  4. Conducts crew proficiency checks, drills, safety sessions, and fire critiques.
  5. May serve as Initial Attack Incident Commander on wildland fires and all risk incidents.
  6. Responds to fire incidents considering weather, topography, fuel types, and fire behavior.
  7. Deploys personnel and equipment to protect values at risk.
  8. Reviews work to ensure standards are met.
  9. Addresses minor complaints and ensures crew safety and training.
Requirements
  • U.S. Citizenship is required.

  • No active real estate license or interest in firms with interest in Federal Lands.
  • Direct Deposit is required.
  • Successful background/suitability investigation required.
  • Resume must demonstrate qualification requirements.
  • Regular and recurring overtime and shift work required.
  • Wear an official uniform while on duty.
  • Must be 18 or older for hazardous positions.
  • Pass pre-employment physical and meet fitness standards.
  • Possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Class A, B, or C endorsement, or obtain within one year.
  • Maintain a valid state driver's license.
  • Probationary period may be required.
  • Pass drug screening tests.
  • This is a Bargaining Unit position.
  • Position is seasonal, with at least 6 months of pay status per year.
Qualifications

Selective Placement Factors: Must possess specific qualifications, including Firefighter Type 1 (FFT1) and Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior (S-290), as applicable.

Must obtain a CDL with Class A, B, or C endorsement within one year of employment.

Specialized Experience

GS-6: 1 year of experience at GS-5 level or equivalent, involving fire crew assistance, operating firefighting equipment, and monitoring fire behavior.

GS-7: 1 year of experience at GS-6 level or equivalent, involving leading fire crews, planning fire operations, and implementing strategies.

Volunteer experience is credited.

Additional Information

This position is subject to age restrictions under the maximum entry age policy, with exceptions for veterans and prior experience.

Wildland fire is defined as non-structure fires in wildland areas, including wildfire and prescribed fire.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Physical exertion, including lifting over 50 pounds, walking, climbing, and working in rugged, hot, and smoky environments, is required.

Work may involve travel, living in backcountry camps, and exposure to hazards such as smoke, fire, and wildlife.
