Job summary

Washington State Department of Natural Resources in Deer Park, WA, seeks four Fuels Crew Leads (Wildland Fire Management Leads) for the Arcadia District. This is a full-time, project-based position running Oct 2026 through Mar 2029, reporting as second-in-charge to the Forest Health Engine Captain on the River City Fuels Crew.

During the fire season, the Fuels Crew Lead will operate as an Engine Lead on a Type 5 brush engine, supervising up to four wildland firefighters, coordinating

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Certified as a NWCG Firefighter Type 1.
  • Basic chainsaw training and experience.
  • Experience identifying forest diseases and pathogens.
  • Experience properly identifying major conifer species of the Inland Northwest.

Responsibilities

  • Lead under Forest Health Engine Captain on River City Fuels reduction crew and coordinate prescriptions.
  • Occasionally assume purchasing, public education, and other duties as assigned.
  • Operate as Wildland Firefighting Engine Lead on a Type 5 brush engine during fire season, supervising up to 4 firefighters.
  • Create daily engine schedules and coordinate training and incident reviews.
