Job summary

Forest Service seeks a Wildland Firefighter (Fire Engine Operation) to operate engine equipment and support suppression and prescribed fire operations across multiple locations in the rest of the U.S. The role requires extensive training, physical fitness, and the ability to work in remote locations.

The position is full-time, temporary, with a pay rate reflective of the GW pay plan, and includes pre-employment drug testing and background checks.

Qualifications

  • You must be a US Citizen or US National.
  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be Selective Service registered or exempt.
  • Must pass E-Verify employment verification.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Subject to background investigation and/or fingerprint check.
  • Willing to live/work in remote locations (volatile/unpredictable).
  • Must pass the Work Capacity Test (WCT) for Wildland Firefighters.
  • FFT1 and S-290 NWCG core requirements completed.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as senior wildland firefighter on a wildland fire engine and performs engine operation duties in suppression and prescribed fire.
  • Drives engine to fire locations with safety of crew and equipment in mind.
  • Operates pump, primes engine, pours water and handles hoses/nozzles for suppression.
  • May serve as Incident Commander or water handling specialist and maintain equipment.
  • Participates in training, drills, safety sessions, and fire critiques.
