The WIC Qualified Nutritionist (QN) will provide nutrition services to WIC participants and comply with all USDA, state and Ryan Health policies. This position serves as a nutrition resource for the agency as well as the community. This work is carried out in support of the mission and goals of Ryan Health.
Essential Functions:
- Remain informed on current evidence-based nutrition guidelines and public health recommendations.
- Screen all participants to determine when hematology services are required in accordance with NYSDOH and Ryan Health policies and procedures.
- Assess and counsel participants using participant-centered skills, and assess nutritional status based on anthropometric, hematological and other medical information to determine all appropriate NYSDOH risk criteria for WIC program eligibility.
- Promote breastfeeding initiation and help to increase breastfeeding exclusivity and duration rates through individual instruction and group education.
- Support the Breastfeeding Peer Counseling Program by participating in activities and referring participants to the Breastfeeding Coordinator and Peer Counselors.
- Document all nutrition education sessions, group or individual, in the participant’s electronic record.
- Scan and maintain all required documents into participant’s electronic file in accordance with NYSDOH WIC Program guidelines.
- Ensure that all participants have received WIC orientation and are familiar with WIC program policies and procedures.
- Demonstrate the nutrition knowledge and skills necessary to provide nutritional assessment and interventions appropriate to the age and needs of the participant served.
- Correctly open, maintain and document high-risk care plans in accordance with NYSDOH WIC policies.
- Keep abreast of new NYS DOH WIC Program policies and procedures as well as new developments in nutrition and health by attending NYS DOH and Center meetings, trainings, and other conferences.
- Refer WIC Participants to services and community agencies as appropriate and document accordingly in the electronic record.
- Assist the QN/Outreach Coordinator and QN/Breastfeeding Coordinator with developing community partnerships to maintain and grow the WIC Program caseload.
- Conduct public health detailing as required by NYSDOH and serve as a reliable resource for nutrition information for health care practitioners in the community and within Ryan Health.
- Demonstrate a professional, courteous and respectful attitude in dealing with participants, immediate supervisor, WIC staff, vendors and other employees.
- Demonstrate the nutrition knowledge and skills necessary to provide nutritional assessment and interventions appropriate to the age and needs of the participant served.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the director of WIC and nutrition.
- Immediately report any problems or unusual occurrences to the director of WIC and nutrition.
Qualifications
Minimum Experience and Skills Required:
Previous WIC experience
Minimum Experience and Skills Preferred:
Bilingual/strong proficiency in Spanish strongly preferred
Education, Licenses and/or Certifications Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in nutrition OR Master’s, OR Doctoral degree in Nutrition from an accredited college or university.

- Professional, courteous and respectful attitude in dealing with patients.
- Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient served (if applicable).
- Commits to exceeding expectations of the patient.

- Asks others for opinions and feedback; provides feedback in a tactful respectful way;
Minimal Training Time:
- 90-day introductory period.

- The work is primarily in a mental health clinic and/or general primary care setting which includes the unpredictability in behaviors of individuals and acute and chronic infectious diseases which may be contagious. Adequate preparation and precaution is necessary.
