JOB DESCRIPTION

About Who Decides

Who Decides will bring labor, parents, educators, civil-rights groups and other trusted organizations together around a common AI safety agenda for Democrats. Right now, a few executives inside a handful of companies are making all the decisions as AI reshapes entire industries, education, communities, and safety, and as the most powerful models grow beyond our ability to control them. The public has virtually no say, and neither political party has staked out a comprehensive agenda. Who Decides exists to make sure Democrats do, by building the coalitions needed to win elections on AI safety and govern AI so that the public sets the rules for the technology.

The Role

We are looking for a qualified candidate who will build Who Decides’ communication strategy and operations from the ground up. This will include building and managing its public profile and brand as well as developing messaging guidance and collateral across the organization. They will oversee all external-facing messaging and material coming from Who Decides including op-eds, press releases, statements, and speeches, policy white papers, donor materials, and more. They will oversee social media, the website, and any email program(s) from Who Decides. This roll will work closely with a Communications consultant and support press and media outreach efforts, including pitching reporters, securing media placements, and maintaining strong relationships with members of the press. The ideal candidate should be able to work across polling, policy research, and political expertise to craft clear and compelling messaging that is easy to digest for an everyday audience.

Qualifications

  • Years of Experience: 7+ years of communications experience in Democratic politics, campaigns, or advocacy
  • Experience preparing and staffing a high-profile principal for TV, press, and public events
  • Rapid response and crisis communications experience
  • Ability to explain complex issues in clear, simple language
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Active relationships with reporters, particularly in political and policy media; strong national political and/or tech media relationships preferred
  • Experience managing social media, email, and digital communications
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with an ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines
  • Proven track record of proactively crafting and placing compelling media pitches and securing earned media
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
  • Must live in the New York City or Washington, DC area and be comfortable with mostly in-person work
