More than half the world’s population sees AP journalism every day.

The Associated Press seeks a talented journalist to join its bureau in Washington as a news editor overseeing coverage of the White House. This editor will direct and guide AP’s reporting of the presidency including domestic and foreign policy and national security issues. The editor will work in close coordination with teams in Washington and globally to ensure coverage is distinctive and ambitious and connects the dots between the decisions made by the White House and the impact those actions have around the United States and world.

Responsibilities:

In this role, you will lead a team of White House reporters based in Washington and collaborate closely with other editors and journalists to drive coverage about the presidency and craft a report rich in exclusive spot news and deeply reported enterprise. You will be comfortable with organizing and directing breaking news and working across media formats to serve AP’s wide-ranging set of customers and digital audiences across the globe. You must have the ability and willingness to work at night and on weekends as AP is a 24/7 operation.

We’re looking for someone who will:

  • lead a team of reporters and edit stories to deliver spot news and enterprise coverage that breaks news, has impact and is exclusive to AP.
  • demonstrate strong communication skills and work collaboratively with the diverse team of journalists at the AP who operate in all formats: text, photo, video, audio, digital, social, interactive and graphics.
  • have a great news sense, with the ability to help reporters deliver engaging stories that people will want to share, like and talk about on social media and other platforms.
  • pursue innovative and inclusive coverage techniques while maintaining AP’s standards for integrity and fact-based, nonpartisan journalism.
Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications:

You must have demonstrated excellence as a journalist, with a deep record of delivering exclusive, illuminating and distinctive stories on challenging assignments. The successful candidate will have extensive experience covering and editing news about politics and Washington, leading a team, running complex and sensitive stories and organizing and allocating resources. Applicants must be able to support, guide, motivate and inspire journalists to achieve success across formats. You must be able to effectively communicate and coordinate with AP staff throughout the company and AP customers worldwide. A history of leading journalists working in more than one format is a major plus.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, such as at least five years of full-time experience at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, online or digital news outlet, or an AP bureau or regional desk.
  • Authorization to work in the U.S. will be mandatory.
  • Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English. Professional competency in a language besides English is a plus.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational and planning skills, with the ability to juggle multiple projects across formats and deliver success on complex story lines.

The anticipated salary range for this position is $130,000 – $170,000 — contingent on experience and other job-related factors. Employees are eligible to participate, according to the terms of the official plan documents, in a 401(k) plan, employer-sponsored health insurance plan, and are eligible for paid time off and holidays in accordance with AP policy.
