Position Summary

An assistant editor works in print or online media—books, magazines, or newspapers—and supports senior editors by managing content, editing, fact‑checking, layout, and coordination with staff.

Responsibilities
  • Assists in selecting stories for print or online publication.
  • Conducts research and fact‑checking, verifying statistics and facts presented in articles.
  • Edits articles for content, grammar, style, and adherence to a style guide.
  • Helps with layout, selecting photographs, charts, graphs, and other illustrations.
  • Generates new story ideas and assigns stories to reporters, writers, or freelancers.
  • Collaborates closely with copy editors, fact‑checkers, graphic designers, and other production staff.
  • Responds to questions from writers and other staff members.
  • In book publishing, works with manuscripts, author relations, and literary agents to acquire new manuscripts.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree, typically in English, journalism, or a related field.
  • Experience in publishing—such as copy editing or fact‑checking—preferred.
  • Strong communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to cultivate positive relationships with writers and editors.
