Field Technician Overview

A field technician performs on‑site tasks in a variety of domains—including archaeology, meteorology, HVAC, avionics, broadcasting, food production, health care, and office equipment—working outside of traditional office settings and often traveling to multiple locations.

Primary Responsibilities

• Surveying, controlled excavation, plan view preparation, and artifact collection in archaeological digs.
• Managing meteorological tower siting, installation, routine and emergency maintenance, and instrumentation setup.
• Repairing and maintaining HVAC and refrigeration units, such as soft‑serve freezers and domestic appliances.
• Servicing avionics on helicopters, laboratory equipment, and television broadcast signal devices.
• Troubleshooting and repairing machinery in food production and office equipment such as laser printers and copiers.
• Conducting fraud investigations within health care fraud detection programs.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in archaeology, anthropology, meteorology, HVAC, or a related field.
• Completion of a field school or similar training for archaeological technicians.
• Relevant industry certifications such as technician III training or EPA Universal certification for refrigeration work.
• Experience with equipment installation, routine and emergency maintenance.
