Job description

Job Overview

Bridge engineers help vehicles and pedestrians cross rivers, valleys, roads and other obstacles. They are civil engineers who specialize in bridge design and construction. Some design new bridges, while others inspect and plan the rehabilitation of older ones. They work as project managers overseeing the actual bridge construction process, typically employed by heavy construction and highway construction companies, design and consulting firms, and government transportation agencies.

Responsibilities

Bridge engineers build a variety of bridges—including cable, truss, arch and suspension types—by preparing plans, specifications and cost estimates. During planning and design, they assess the best bridge type for the area and determine how the selected site will support it. They perform load rating and stress analysis calculations to ensure the structure can withstand the weight and environmental stresses of the site, while meeting local and regional building codes and requirements. In project‑management roles, they oversee construction, ensuring projects stay on schedule and on budget, monitor building progress on site, resolve problems encountered during construction, and coordinate with construction crews, subcontractors, suppliers and other stakeholders to guarantee safe and successful completion.

Qualifications & Requirements

A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in civil or structural engineering is required, although many professionals hold advanced degrees. Professional licensing or certification is often required, and in the United States state certification as a licensed professional engineer is usually mandatory. Those who conduct bridge inspections typically have additional inspection training or certification. Strong math, science, spatial reasoning and communication skills are important. Travel may be required, with significant time away from home or long commutes. Proficiency with bridge design software and related computer applications is essential.
