Job description

Are you ready to take on a pivotal role in transforming regulatory practices within a leading energy company? WGL is seeking an energetic and detail-oriented Assistant General Counsel, Regulatory to lead our efforts in rate cases and regulatory matters within the District of Columbia. This is your chance to be at the forefront of major initiatives, driving innovation and excellence in a dynamic legal environment.

Reporting to the Deputy General Counsel for Regulatory, the Assistant General Counsel, Regulatory will be responsible for matters before the utility commissions in the greater Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia (DMV) region, with a specific focus on the District of Columbia Public Service Commission (DC PSC). The ideal candidate will have significant administrative and civil litigation experience, including practicing before the DC PSC, another public utility commission or FERC, and a proven track record of successfully filing rate cases and other applications that create value for the Company. This person will have the opportunity to serve in a first chair capacity on a variety of matters before the public utility commissions.

What You'll Do:

  1. Lead Rate Cases: Manage all aspects of rate cases, including drafting testimony, responding to discovery requests, and preparing motions and briefs.
  2. Regulatory Representation: Represent WGL in various regulatory proceedings before the DC Public Service Commission, including investigatory proceedings and consumer complaints.
  3. Non-Rate Case Litigation: Address non-rate case matters such as cost recovery issues and the accelerated pipe replacement program.
  4. Government Proceedings: Draft testimony and comments for DC government rule makings and legislation impacting operations.
  5. Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work with various business units to ensure regulatory compliance and develop positions on regulatory issues.

Who You Are:

  1. Experienced: Minimum of 7 years practicing law with a focus on regulatory matters in the energy sector.
  2. Educated: Juris Doctor (JD) degree and active bar membership in at least one jurisdiction (DC, Maryland, or Virginia preferred) with the ability to waive into the DC bar required.
  3. Regulatory Experience: Significant experience before public utility commissions, ideally in the DMV region, or before FERC.
  4. Communicator: Excellent written and verbal communication skills to convey complex legal concepts effectively.
  5. Proactive: Detail-oriented, energetic, and able to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

We offer a competitive salary range of $163,000 to $248,500 per year, commensurate with experience, education, and skills. In addition, we provide a comprehensive benefits package including health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off.
