Science Communication Internships in Wildlife Education and Career Mentoring

Fancy Scientist LLC is offering 2 internships in social media and podcasting in the field of wildlife education and career mentoring.

About the Organization:

Stephanie Manka, Ph.D. is a wildlife biologist of 20 years turned digital content creator who loves to teach people about wildlife, conservation, and science, providing lifestyle solutions so that we can collectively make a difference to help wildlife and restore the planet. She empowers and prepares aspiring and entry-level wildlife professionals so that they can fulfill their life’s purpose of protecting wildlife while getting paid and loving their job. In 2020, she formed the Fancy Scientist LLC to accomplish this mission.

Internship expectations and conditions for ALL internships:

  • Location: 100% remote, open to any location
  • Experience: none, but see preferred qualifications
  • Dedicate at least 10 hours/week towards internship
  • Commitment from early October until late December; internship is open for longer if intern desires
  • As this is a small business with limited funding, this internship is currently unpaid (but see next bullet). In exchange, interns receive access to the Successful Wildlife Professional mentoring program and top-level mentoring from Dr. Stephanie Manka. Access to course content is maintained indefinitely if internship responsibilities are fulfilled. The internship can last longer and may become paid/part-time depending on funding.

Internship 1: Social media

Responsibilities:

  • Repurpose content to create short videos and posts for Instagram, YouTube Shorts, TikTok, BlueSky, Threads, Facebook, and X
  • Maintain a social media calendar
  • Track analytics and provide insights
  • Collaborate with other interns
  • Other tasks as needed

Expectations:

  • Generate at least 3 posts per week

Essential qualifications (in addition to core qualifications for all internships):

  • Love for social media and familiarity with mentioned platforms
  • Understanding of trends and ability to work in a fast-paced team

Internship 2: Podcast

Responsibilities:

  • Create and edit podcasts and YouTube videos
  • Draft show notes and publish on Wordpress
  • Communicate with guests
  • Optimize YouTube thumbnails, titles, descriptions, and tags
  • Create graphics and track analytics
  • Other tasks as needed

Expectations:

  • Produce one podcast at least every two weeks

Essential qualifications for Podcast intern:

  • Team-oriented, strong visual design sense, highly organized
  • Love for science communication

Preferred qualifications for Podcast intern:

  • Experience with WordPress
  • Experience in Canva

Core Qualifications for ALL internships:

  • Detail-oriented and able to follow directions and feedback
  • Passionate about wildlife, nature, and/or conservation
  • Can-do attitude and problem-solving mindset
  • Self-starter and self-motivated

Join the Stream Ecology Lab at Missouri State University. We seek a graduate student interested in MS (Masters) thesis research on the distribution and ecology of gastropod species of concern in streams and rivers of the Ozark Highlands ecoregion. What You’ll Do includes bottle-feeding fawns, health monitoring, cleaning, feeding, and assisting with new arrivals.

What We’re Looking For: Interest in animal care, reliable work ethic, physical stamina, no experience required but training provided. Must be able to work in outdoor conditions in various times. Internship details include travel to Belize with project fee of $1850 per month.
